New Jersey City University senior shortstop MEGAN GINTER (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) was 3-for-4 with three runs and three stolen bases and helped spark the Gothic Knights to their first New Jersey Athletic Conference victory of the season as NJCU scored four runs in the fifth inning of game two and prevailed, 6-4, on Tuesday afternoon over Richard Stockton College. The Ospreys won the opening game of the doubleheader, 6-0.

With the game two victory NJCU (12-24, 1-15 NJAC) snapped a 10-game road losing streak against the Ospreys in Pomona since a 4-0 win on April 11, 2000. The Knights also snapped a 14-game losing streak, picking up their first win since April 7, while ending a 23-game NJAC losing streak. Stockton (14-18, 4-12 NJAC), still leads the all-time series, 49-8 but was eliminated from NJAC Tournament contention with the loss.

The first four innings of game one was a pitcher's duel between NJCU sophomore righty ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) and Stockton senior Brittany Giacomelli (Vineland, NJ/Vineland), as NJCU managed just three hits through the first four frames

while the Ospreys were limited to only four hits. But Stockton scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to open up a 6-0 margin, and the Ospreys would win by that score.

Giacomelli evened her record at 6-6 with her first complete game shutout of the season. She allowed just three hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Freshman second baseman Danielle Kohen (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) was 2-for-3 for Stockton. Junior third baseman Danielle Accardi (East Brunswick, NJ/Mount St. Mary) produced three RBIs and junior shortstop Joey Afflitto (Brick, NJ/Brick) scored twice, batting 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Sophomore third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown), junior center fielder JESS MUCERINO (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) and senior first baseman TAYLOR LANG (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) each had one hit in game one. O'Beirne (7-12) allowed five earned runs and 10 hits with five walks and one strikeout.

Stockton scored once in the bottom of the first as Afflitto was hit by a pitch in a leadoff role. After a single and walk loaded the bases with no outs, Accardi knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly, before O'Beirne ended the threat with a pop fly and ground ball to shortstop.

An unearned run added to the Stockton lead in the bottom of the fifth. Senior designated player Meaghan Ireland (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) reached on an outfield error and reached second base before being sacrificed to third. Accardi's second sacrifice fly and second RBI of the game made it 2-0.

Stockton put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a pair of singles, Afflitto's RBI single made it 3-0 before the Ospreys fourth run crossed the plate on a wild pitch. With one out, Accardi registered her third RBI of the game with a single for a 5-0 cushion before an RBI single by sophomore catcher Jenna Kinter (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) knocked in the final run of the inning.

Mucerino pitched a four-hitter and allowed just one hit in the final six innings of the game for the

victory (5-12) She allowed two earned runs in 7.0 innings with one strikeout and three walks.

Ginter, who was 3-for-4 with three runs and three stolen bases, swiped her conference-leading 32nd of the season while moving into second place in single-season school history in the category. Satz was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI and now had 96 hits in just 76 career games as she attempts to become the 11th member of NJCU's 100 hit club and only the second to reach the milestone in two seasons. Rookie second baseman JANISSA CARDONA (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) produced a 2-for-3 effort with one RBI.

Freshman Michelle Pietrocola (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) suffered the loss (4-2). In 5.1 innings, she struck out six and walked two, but allowed six runs (two earned) and eight hits. Freshman Bianca DiDolce (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) had one strikeout and allowed one hit in two thirds of an inning.

Sophomore designated player Heather Corica (Iselin, NJ/JFK) was the lone Osprey with multiple hits, batting 2-for-3. Afflitto scored twice and had two steals. Ireland also had two steals for the hosts.

Stockton, which led 2-0, had three of its four hits in the first inning.  Afflitto singled and stole second and Kohen walked before both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Junior center fielder Katelyn Derewecki (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) generated a sacrifice fly before Accardi doubled to make it 2-0.

NJCU cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the inning. Ginter singled, stole second and third and scored on a throwing error. She would have scored on the next play as Satz singled—the 95th hit of her career.

Stockton regained a two-run lead in the second inning. Afflitto walked with one out then scored an

unearned run after two committed two separate throwing errors. Mucerino stranded Kohen, who had reached on the first error, at third with a pair of infield outs.

NJCU's third error of the game led to a fifth inning run. Corica singled with two outs and Ireland pinch ran, stealing second and third. A throwing error on the second steal allowed her to score when the inning would have ended; the next Stockton batter lined out to end the frame.

That led to the decisive fifth inning as NJCU rallied to tie the game at 4-4 before moving ahead for the first time. The Knights took advantage of a pair of Stockton errors in the inning as the hosts committed four in the game. Sophomore designated player SAMANTHA RUDICK (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley Regional-Demarest) and Ginter had back-to-back singles to open the inning. Mucerino laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners but when Stockton committed a throwing error, Rudick scored and Mucerino reached to put runners on the corners with no outs. Satz reached on another throwing error as Mucerino moved to second and Ginter scored, making it a one-run, 4-3 contest.

After a fly out, NJCU executed a sacrifice bunt to move Mucerino to third and Satz to second with two outs, and the decision paid dividends as Lang singled home Mucerino with the tying run. Cardona followed with her second hit of the game, an RBI single that scored Satz and gave the Knights a 5-4 advantage. NJCU stranded two runners on base to end the inning.

Mucerino capitalized on the four-run inning, setting down the Ospreys in order in the sixth inning. NJCU tacked on a critical insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Ginter singled with one out, stole second and scored on an RBI single to right by Satz for a 6-4 cushion.

Mucerino locked down NJCU's first NJAC win of the season in the seventh inning. After Afflitto was hit by a pitch, Kohen grounded out. Then with one out, Derewecki lined into a double play to center field as senior center fielder DANIELLE DELFINO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep)   made the catch and threw to second to end the game.

Weather-permitting, NJCU will host FDU-Florham in the final home doubleheader and final non-conference games of the season on Thursday, April 27 at 3 p.m. The Knights will also celebrate Senior Day, and honor its four four-year seniors—Delfino, ALEXANDRA DiIORIO (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield), Lang and JORDAN POTTER (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep).
