GLASSBORO, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Rowan University, ranked No. 20 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association NTCA Top 25 Division III Poll, received a pair of dominant pitching performances and captured the 2011 New Jersey Athletic Conference regular season championship by sweeping New Jersey City University, 8-0 (six innings) and 12-3 (five innings) on Saturday at the Rowan Softball Field. It was the 2011 regular season finale.
Rowan improved to 28-9 and 14-4 in the NJAC while winning its ninth in a row. NJCU's 31st season of softball ends with a mark of 12-26 and 1-17 NJAC. Rowan leads the all-time series, 26-0.
**************GAME 1: ROWAN UNIVERSITY 8, NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY 0**************
In game one, Rowan scored seven runs in the second inning and two pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Profs collected 12 hits in the game.
Junior right-hander Amanda Singer (Monmouth Junction, NJ/East Brunswick) improved to 16-5 by tossing four innings, allowing just four hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Senior righty Erika Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Regional) fired the final two innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout.
NJCU rookie left fielder JANISSA CARDONA (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) was the lone player with multiple hits for NJCU, going 2-for-3. Sophomore righty ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) took the loss (7-13), allowing only two earned runs and 12 hits in 5.1 innings. She walked five and struck out two.
Junior catcher/center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) walked three times and had two RBIs. Sophomore first baseman Stephanie Labas (Millville, NJ/Millville) and junior third baseman Julie Leskanic (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) each had two RBIs while senior left fielder Casey Roselle (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) and freshman second baseman Jenny Arcella (Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) contributed a pair of hits each. Senior designated player Ashley Landi (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) scored twice. Seven different Profs scored in the game.
Rowan got the runs it needed in the second inning, notching seven runs on seven hits as 13 batters came to the plate. A leadoff error contributed to the outburst as six runs were unearned. Leskanic, Veneziano and Labas each had a two-run single during the inning.
After being held off the scoreboard in the third, fourth and fifth innings, a ground ball by sophomore Nicole Escudero (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) drove in the eighth run in the sixth inning as Rowan capped the game due to the eight-run rule.
**************GAME 2: ROWAN UNIVERSITY 12, NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY 3**************
In game two, junior righty Jamie Minix (Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) allowed only one hit—a two-run double by NJCU rookie catcher MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) in the third inning—as the Profs swept the doubleheader with a one-hitter in five innings.
Minix (12-4) allowed three runs (two earned) with four strikeouts and three walks in four innings before Knorr pitched a 1-2-3 fifth to seal it.
Bariso was 1-for-1 with two RBIs and finished her impressive freshman campaign with 27 RBIs, 40 hits and a team-best 17 extra base hits, including eight doubles and a single-season record-tying seven homers.
Rowan was led by junior shortstop Ashley Minch (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Memorial) with four RBIs, batting 3-for-3 with three doubles and two runs. Roselle scored twice while batting 2-for-3 and Landi and Arcella also crossed the plate twice. Escudero and sophomore catcher Sam Stevens (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Absegami) added two RBIs apiece.
Rowan scored four runs in the first and second innings for an 8-0 lead and tacked on four more in the top of the fourth for the final margin. Junior righty JESS MUCERINO (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) took the loss (5-13), allowing 12 runs and 12 hits with three strikeouts and five walks.
In the first inning, Minch had a two-run double and Stevens provided a two-run single. Veneziano and Landi drove in runs in the second inning before Minch notched another RBI double for an 8-0 cushion.
NJCU scored once in the second inning as Bariso led off with a walk, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on an error. In the second inning, NJCU scored twice to close within an 8-3 deficit. Junior shortstop MEGAN GINTER (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) and Mucerino posted back-to-back walks before Bariso ripped a two-run double to left center.
But Rowan ended the game in five innings with four in the fourth. The Profs had seven doubles in the game and three in the inning. Labas and Minch had RBI doubles before Escudero's double knocked in the final two runs.
