Montclair State broke open a 3-0 game with 10 runs in the sixth inning on only six hits to put away the game in six innings. Freshman right-hander Alex Hill (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) struck out nine and walked none, while allowing just one run and four hits in 6.0 innings to improve to 7-2 overall.
Sophomore third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) was 1-for-3 with an RBI double as NJCU scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth inning to avoid being shutout for the first time this season. Ginter, rookie catcher MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) and senior first baseman TAYLOR LANG (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) each had singles for the Gothic Knights.
MSU had four players generate multiple RBIs, led by freshman second baseman Katie Muglia (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) who was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run. Sophomore catcher Heather Bergman (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Gov. Livingston) had two runs and two RBIs, going 1-for-3. Freshman first baseman Alisha Cumberton (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) knocked in two RBIs, going 1-for-2 with two walks and a run. Russo also had two RBIs, going 1-for-3. Freshman third baseman Dana Amato (Hillside, NJ/Pascack Valley) was 2-for-4 with two runs.
Also for Montclair, sophomore left fielder Kelli O'Brien (Edison, NJ/Edison) scored three runs, batting 1-for-2 with an RBI. Senior center fielder Leslie Gonzalez (West New York, NJ/North Bergen) was the only Red Hawk not to record a hit, but walked and scored twice.
Sophomore right ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) pitched well for the first five innings before taking the loss (6-5). She allowed 12 earned runs and 10 hits with five strikeouts and five walks.
MSU scored twice in the fourth inning to snap a scoreless game as Cumberton ripped a two-RBI double down the left field line for a 2-0 lead. Gonzalez made a huge defensive play for MSU in the bottom of the fourth inning to keep NJCU off the board. Bariso drove a two-out pitch to deep center field, before Gonzalez appeared to take a potential fifth homerun of the season away with a catch on top of the fence. Muglia made it 3-0 with an infield single in the fifth inning.
MSU put the game away in the sixth inning. A hit by pitch and two walks loaded the bases with no outs. Russo had a single before Hill drove in the fifth run with a groundout. After another run-producing single, Muglia had a two-run single for a 9-0 lead and Amato doubled to left center for a 10th run. Bergman added a two-run single before a Russo sacrifice fly capped the scoring.
**********************GAME 2: MONTCLAIR 7, NEW JERSEY CITY 1**********************
In game two, NJCU outhit the Red Hawks, 6-4, and got five strong innings out of junior righty JESS MUCERINO (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park), before MSU scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning to widen the margin in what had been a 3-1 contest.
Offensively, Mucerino was 2-for-4 for NJCU. Sophomore left fielder SAMANTHA RUDICK (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley Regional-Demarest) was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Ginter was 1-for-4 with a steal.
Russo led Montclair, going 1-for-3 with three RBIs—all on a three-run homer to center field in the four-run sixth inning. It was her second homer of the season. Cumberton was 1-for-3 with a fifth-inning solo homerun, her second of the season. Muglia and junior shortstop Priscilla Camacho (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) each had a hit and run scored; Camacho added one RBI.
Montclair got a solid performance from sophomore righty Jamie Miller (Spotswood, NJ/St. John Vianney), who allowed one run and six hits with four Ks and two walks over 111 pitches to improve to 5-2. Mucerino (3-6) was charged with four earned runs and four hits, with two strikeouts and five walks.
NJCU scored first in the second inning. A two-out walk by freshman center fielder JANISSA CARDONA (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth), and a single by senior right fielder JORDAN POTTER (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) brought up Rudick who singled home Cardona for a 1-0 lead.
MSU moved in front for good with two unearned runs in the bottom of the second. A two-out error with no one on base extended the inning. The Red Hawks scored both of its runs on wild pitches.
The game remained a one-run contest until Cumberton's two-out solo homer to left center on the ninth pitch of the at bat. Russo's three-run dinger and an RBI double by Camacho made it 7-1.
Weather-permitting, NJCU is back at home on Thursday, April 7 at 3 p.m. with a non-conference doubleheader against Baruch College. MSU visits the College of Staten Island that day at 3:30 p.m.
