In the opening game, NJCU led 2-1 in the fifth inning before driving home three runs for a 5-1 margin and extended the advantage to 7-1 with two more markers in the sixth inning before winning by four runs.
Bariso led the 10-hit attack going 3-for-3 with a run and RBI and senior second baseman DANIELLE DELFINO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two doubles. Sophomore third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) had two RBIs.
Ginter was 2-for-4 with one RBI and a double but was thrown out stealing for the first time in 24 attempts this season. Senior right fielder JORDAN POTTER (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) went 2-for-3 with one run. Junior center fielder JESS MUCERINO (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) scored twice and rookie designated player JANISSA CARDONA (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) was 1-for-2 with two runs and one RBI.
NJCU, which entered the game sixth in the nation in stolen bases per game, and successful in 65-of-66 attempts on the season, picked off two more steals in the win, but was caught twice—the first time since March 7—snapping a streak of 65 consecutive steals without being thrown out.
Sophomore right ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) pitched well to earn the win (7-5). In 7.0 innings over 92 pitches she allowed just three runs and seven hits, with four strikeouts and three walks.
Baruch junior shortstop Melanie Pellegrino (Brooklyn, NY) and freshman designated player Olivia Auman (Queens, NY) were each 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Sophomore Nicole Flint (Brentwood, NY) took the loss (2-4), allowing six earned runs and 10 hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 6.0 innings.
NJCU got the scoring going in the first inning. Mucerino reached on a wild pitch and Bariso singled to center, before the tandem teamed up to steal second and third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Satz. NJCU added a second run in the bottom of the third. Cardona reached on an error and Ginter singled before Bariso singled to left center for a 2-0 lead.
Baruch made it a one-run game in the fifth inning when Pellegrino doubled to left center after the Bearcats led off with a single. With the tying run on third base, Baruch grounded into a double play that was orchestrated when Delfino made an alert tag on a base runner before completing the throw to first to end the threat.
After getting great defense, NJCU responded offensively in the bottom of the frame with three runs to surge ahead 5-1. With two outs and one out, Mucerino was hit by a pitch and Bariso singled to keep the inning alive and load the bags. Satz drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk on a 3-2 pitch. Delfino lofted a double to right-center to notch two more RBIs.
NJCU increased the margin to 7-1 in the sixth inning. Potter singled, stole second, and scored when Cardona doubled down the left field line. Ginter ripped an RBI double to left field for the final run. Baruch scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning as Pellegrino singled and scored on a double by Auman, who eventually came around on a wild pitch.
**********************GAME 2: NEW JERSEY CITY 5, BARUCH 1**********************
In game two, Mucerino allowed one unearned run in the first inning then frustrated the Bearcats through the rest of the contest, stranded 11 Baruch base runners in the 5-1 win. In 7.0 innings she allowed seven hits with three strikeouts and five walks over 110 pitches.
Bariso had three of NJCU's four RBIs in the game while Ginter and Mucerino each scored twice. Ginter had a double, the 22nd of her career, tying Satz for seventh place in program history. Satz was 1-for-3 with one RBI for NJCU.
Baruch had seven hits, but no player had multiple hits and all seven were singles. Senior Andrea Tepfer (Staten Island, NY) took the loss (1-5), allowing five earned runs and six hits in 5.0 innings, with two strikeouts and no walks. Auman pitched the final inning without any damage.
In the first inning, a two-out error with no one on base extended the inning and Baruch capitalized, scoring on an RBI single by freshman second baseman Julia Giustiniani (Eastchester, NY). The Bearcats gambled for a second run, before Ginter fired a strike to the plate where Bariso applied an inning-ending tag.
NJCU tacked on two runs in the bottom of the first to gain a 2-1 lead which it would not relinquish. Ginter and Mucerino were hit by pitches and moved to third on a groundout by Bariso. Ginter scored on a wild pitch to tie the game before Satz drove in the eventual winning run with a ground ball.
Baruch threatened in each inning, but stranded two runners in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings, and one runner in each of the remaining frames. A great diving stop by Ginter on a ball that was heading up the middle prevented Baruch from tying the game in the second inning. A force play at third by Satz helped stop a fourth-inning opportunity for the Bearcats. Mucerino coaxed a groundball back to the mound in the fifth inning to again extinguish a Baruch scoring chance.
In the fifth, NJCU put the game away, and over the fence. Cardona led off with a single and Ginter doubled to left center for her 99th career hit on a ball that nearly cleared the fence. Mucerino reached on a fielder's choice that retired Cardona. With one out, Bariso slammed the first pitch she saw deep to over the right center fence for a three-run bomb and 5-1 lead. Baruch did not score in the final two innings as NJCU's defense held the lead.
NJCU is back in action on Saturday, April 9 at 1 p.m. when it meets Rutgers-Newark in a New Jersey Athletic Conference twinbill in Newark, NJ. Baruch visits Hunter College in a CUNYAC conference doubleheader that day at noon.
