Gerrity Athletic Complex. The game, which took just 2:15 to complete, was played in a steady rain through the final innings.
WPU, playing its first road game of the season, wins for the 10th time in 11 games to improve to 13-7-1 and 3-1 in the NJAC. The Pioneers first 20 games of the year had all been home or neutral field contests. The Gothic Knights (4-17, 0-4 NJAC) drop their fifth straight. NJCU has now lost 12 games by four or fewer runs this season.
In defeat, senior center fielder KEN WITTE (Wantage, NJ/High Point Regional) belted his first homerun of the season and fifth of his NJCU career. NJCU had five hits in the game. Freshman second baseman ROB ROMAN (Hoboken, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) was 2-for-4 with a run and double. Sophomore left fielder ANDREW RIVERA (Edison, NJ/Edison) was 1-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs.

Also for the visitors, freshman second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, NJ/Morris Hills) was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Senior right-hander Kevin Wieme (Bayville, NJ/Paramus) improved to 2-1 with the win. In 7.0 innings over 95 pitches, he allowed three runs and four hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Freshman righty Eric Villegas (Newark, NJ/Elizabeth) threw 31 pitches in the final two innings, allowing one run and one hit.
For NJCU, rookie righty #T.J. JANHO# (Somerset, NJ/Timothy Christian) lost for only the second time (1-2), allowing six runs and eight hits with two walks in 5.0 innings. Rookie left-hander ZACK MARKLE (Hoboken, NJ/Hoboken) allowed just one unearned run and three hits with one strikeout and no walks in 2.0 innings of relief. Sophomore lefty PEDRO GARCIA (North Bergen, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) pitched the final two innings, allowing one run and three hits with three K's and two walks.
WPU quickly got on the board in the top of the first. After a leadoff walk, Derner tripled to deep center for a 1-0 lead before scoring on a sacrifice fly by junior designated hitter Rob Doughty (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic).
After NJCU left two runners on the bags in the second inning, the Pioneers increased the lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Senior left fielder Mike Moran (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) tripled to right center with two outs on a ball that one-hopped the fence, before Crouch doubled to center for a 3-0 margin. An RBI single on a 3-2 pitch by Ptaszynski made it 4-0, scoring Crouch.
NJCU got a run back in the bottom of the fourth when Witte drilled a leadoff homerun to left field. The Pioneers tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the fifth for a 6-1 advantage as Montanile doubled down the left field line, scoring Doughty, who walked, and junior right fielder Rob Somers (West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Regional).
In the sixth inning, NJCU loaded the bases. Junior shortstop ROB GONZALEZ (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) led off with a single, senior first baseman MICHAEL FIORENTINO (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) walked and junior catcher FRANCISCO RAMIREZ (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) also walked with one out. A sacrifice fly by senior right fielder JORGE GUTIERREZ (Sewaren, NJ/Hudson Catholic) cut the deficit to 6-2 before the Knights stranded two base runners.
The run by Gonzalez was the 99th of his career and 148th career hit. He needs one run to become the fourth player in program history to reach the century mark. The hit ties him for seventh place in program history in hits with current assistant coach Charlie Auletto, and one behind head coach Jonathan Thomas for sixth place on the career charts.
In the seventh inning, Witte made a great diving catch in the left-center gap for the first out before Derner doubled. Montanile singled home the seventh run. WPU added an eighth run in the eighth inning when junior shortstop Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) walked with the bases loaded. The Pioneers left the bases loaded in the inning and stranded 10 runners in the game. NJCU scored one final run in the ninth inning as Roman doubled and scored on a ground ball by Rivera.
NJCU and WPU both return to action with NJAC doubleheaders on Saturday, April 9 at 11:30 a.m. The Gothic Knights travel to Camden, NJ to face Rutgers University-Camden while WPU hosts Richard Stockton College.
