With the doubleheader split, NJCU (5-18, 1-5 NJAC) snapped a five-game skid. Camden improved to 8-12 (1-5 NJAC).
*******************GAME 1: NEW JERSEY CITY 6, RUTGERS UNIVERSITY-CAMDEN 1*******************
NJCU scored five times in the top of the eighth inning and Maldonado had the finest pitching performance of the season for a member of the Gothic Knight staff, tossing 8.0 innings of seven-hit baseball, with eight strikeouts and only one walk without allowing an earned run for his first win of the year (1-3). Six of the Scarlet Raptors hits were singles. The eight K's were a career-high, topping the mark of seven accomplished twice in 2009 as a rookie.
Junior catcher FRANCISCO RAMIREZ (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) led NJCU's nine-hit effort, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a double and one run and senior first baseman MICHAEL FIORENTINO (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) was 2-for-4. Senior center fielder KEN WITTE (Wantage, NJ/High Point Regional) added two runs in a 1-for-3 showing.
Rivera, senior designated hitter JORDAN TETRICK (Delray Beach, FL/Radnor (Pa.)) and senior right fielder JORGE GUTIERREZ (Sewaren, NJ/Hudson Catholic) each had a hit and an RBI; Tetrick notched a triple. Rookie left-hander ZACK MARKLE (Hoboken, NJ/Hoboken)was solid in a hitless ninth inning.
For the Raptors, junior first baseman C.J. Mooney (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) and junior third baseman John Santilli (Folsom, NJ/St. Joseph-Hammonton) each batted 2-for-3.
Junior righty Andrew Hoffman (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) took the loss (1-1), allowing four runs and six hits in 7.0 innings with six strikeouts and three walks. Camden used two pitchers in relief to finish the game. Freshman AJ Antuzzi (Delran, NJ/Delran) allowed two runs and two hits without recording an out.
For most of the game, Maldonado was hooked in a pitchers' duel with Hoffman. The Raptors scored an unearned run in the third and the Gothic Knights tied the game in the fourth on an RBI single by Ramirez, knocking in Witte who led off the frame with a single.
The Gothic Knights sent nine men to the plate in the eighth inning, which started with a single to left field by Fiorentino. Freshman ALEX TERAN (North Bergen/North Bergen) ran for Fiorentino and moved to second when Witte was hit by a pitch. Both runners scored on a double into the left field corner by Ramirez for a 3-1 advantage that chased Hoffman. Gutierrez, facing Antuzzi, drove home a run with a single through the right side of a drawn-in infield and Tetrick made it 5-1 with a triple to right-center, before he scored the final run on a two-out single by Rivera.
*******************GAME 2: RUTGERS UNIVERSITY-CAMDEN 7, NEW JERSEY CITY 6 *******************
In the nightcap, NJCU scored three runs in the fourth inning and led 6-3 after five innings before Rutgers-Camden knotted it at 6-6 with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. It remained tied until the bottom of the ninth inning when the Raptors scored on the winning run on an errant throw.
In the bottom of the ninth Camden sophomore second baseman George Spingler (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester Catholic)had an infield single off of NJCU rookie reliever MATT DELBERT (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) and freshman third baseman Ryan Griffith (Upper Deerfield, NJ/Cumberland Regional) drew a walk before Markle came on to face sophomore catcher Joe DiMento (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Township). DiMento dropped a sacrifice down the third base line and Markle tried to make a play on Spingler at third. His throw sailed wide and the error allowed Spingler to cross the plate with the winning run. It was the seventh error in a game that also featured 22 hits, 10 walks, three hit batters and four unearned runs.
In defeat, Rivera had a solid offensive performance. After having only four RBIs his entire freshman season, he batting 2-for-3 with four RBIs, including a three-run inside-the-park homerun—the first round-tripper of his career. Rookie second baseman ROB ROMAN (Hoboken, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) was 2-for-4 with a run and sophomore first baseman THOMAS LACIK (Edison, NJ/Bishop George Ahr) walked and scored three times.
Junior shortstop ROB GONZALEZ (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) was 1-for-5 with one RBI. The hit was the 149th of his career, and he tied current head coach Jonathan Thomas for sixth place in program history.
Mooney was 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the Raptors and junior designated hitter Jon Hydock (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) was 3-for-5 with a run and RBI. Spingler went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and one run and Griffith added a 2-for-4 game. Senior left fielder Tom Clarke (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) scored twice.
Senior righty Greg Himes (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook Regional),who transferred to Rutgers-Camden as a junior, collected his first win in a Raptor uniform. Himes (1-0) worked a scoreless ninth inning, allowing only one hit. Freshman righty Tommy Potts (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Regional) started, allowing six runs (three earned) and five hits with six walks and four strikeouts in 6.0 innings before junior righty Shawn Griffith (Upper Deerfield, NJ/Cumberland Regional) struck out two and allowed two hits in the seventh and eighth innings.
NJCU used four pitchers. Senior righty JEFF KARCZEWSKI (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton West) received a no-decision. In the start he allowed six runs and 11 hits with one K and two walks in 6.0 innings. Senior righty WESTLEY LOPEZ (West New York, NJ/Memorial) pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just two hits with a strikeout and walk. Delbert (1-1) took his first collegiate loss after the unearned run came in during the ninth inning.
After Rutgers-Camden scored a first-inning run on a Mooney RBI single, NJCU countered with two unearned runs in the second frame. Tetrick was hit by a pitch and Lacik walked. Rivera had an RBI grounder that drove in Tetrick before Lacik scored on a subsequent throwing error. Gonzalez had a single to shortstop but NJCU stranded two in the inning.
Camden regained a 3-2 lead in the third inning on four hits, including a two-run single by Spingler, but NJCU battled back with three runs in the top of the fourth and one in the fifth for a 6-3 cushion.
The highlight of the fourth inning was Rivera's inside-the-parker. Lacik led off with a walk and Roman reached on a fielding error. Rivera lofted a shot to the center field fence and used his speed to blaze around the bases. In the fifth inning, Lacik and Roman walked before scoring when Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice.
Camden evened it with three in the sixth inning. With one out, DiMento singled and the Raptors' sophomore centerfielder Albert Rivera (Matawan, NJ/Matawan)drew a walk. Clarke was hit by a pitch to load the bases and junior rightfielder Jon Siswo (Port Reading, NJ/Woodbridge)walked to force home a run. Moments later, Siswo prevented an inning-ending double play with a hard slide, allowing Hydock to collect a fielder's choice RBI. Mooney followed with a single to left, tying the game.
NJCU is off until Thursday, April 14 (3:30 p.m.) when it visits #4 ranked Kean University in the opening day of a two-game home-and-home NJAC series.
