YORK, PA (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Freshman forward
RAPHAEL ARAUJO (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) forced overtime with a game-tying goal with just 1:48 remaining in regulation and New Jersey City University, which outshot McDaniel College, 17-10, settled for a 1-1 double-overtime tie in the opening round of the Holiday Inn Conference Center Soccer Classic, hosted by York College (Pa.) on Saturday.
NJCU (2-1-1) and McDaniel (1-1-1), meeting for the first time in their histories, went to a penalty kick shootout for the sole purpose of advancing one team to Sunday's tournament championship game, and the Green Terror edged the Gothic Knights, 5-4. York (Pa.) defeated Cabrini College, 3-0, in Saturday's other game.
Araujo's goal at the 88:12 mark of the second half off an assist by freshman midfielder
ANDREW LOPES (Union, NJ/Union), came after a loose ball in the box.
McDaniel had led at halftime, 1-0, despite being outshot in the period, 9-4. Junior midfielder
Marrio Davis (Baltimore, Md.) put the Terror on the board at the 35:37 mark, finding the upper-right portion of the net on a volley shot after the Knights had made a defensive clear on a corner kick.
McDaniel had three shots in the second overtime period, but neither team was able to score in the extra 20 minutes, necessitating the shootout to advance on team.
Senior keeper
MANNY LOJO (Clark, NJ/Union Catholic) made four saves in the draw. McDaniel freshman
Sean Best (Adamstown, Md.) had 11 saves as NJCU put 12 shots on goal.
Araujo had five shots and four on goal while senior forward
WALTER AVANS (Roselle Park, NJ/Union Catholic) tallied a game-high six shots (three on goal).
In the shootout, NJCU led off, as senior forward
ALEX CERON (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) and senior midfielder
TOM KRYCHKOWSKI (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) converted shots, before Avans missed on the third try.
McDaniel took a 3-2 margin after freshman
Edgar Escobar (Silver Spring, Md.),
Davis and junior defender
Ben Eveler (York, Pa.) each converted.
The Knights made their final two attempts, with freshman forward
JONNATHAN VELOZ (Newark, NJ/East Side) and Araujo each finding the net. But the Green Terror were able to get conversions from sophomore forward
Luis Calderon (Silver Spring, Md.) and junior defender
Max Rutherford (Potomac, Md.) to advance.
NJCU will face Cabrini College, the same school that the Gothic Knight men's basketball team met in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament, in the consolation game of the York College event on Sunday, September 11 at 1 p.m. It will be the first-ever men's soccer meeting between the programs.
