WAYNE, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University allowed four second-half goals and fell to No. 22 ranked, William Paterson, 5-0, in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) men's soccer opener for both teams on Saturday at the Pioneer Soccer Park.
With the loss, New Jersey City falls to 2-3-1 (0-1 NJAC) and William Paterson, ranked #22 in the second D3soccer.com poll of the season, improves to 6-0-1 (1-0 NJAC). The Pioneers lead the all-time series, 31-19-4.
In defeat, senior keeper
MANNY LOJO (Clark, NJ/Union Catholic) made five saves for the Gothic Knights, including an impressive stop off a
Marcus Hackett (Montclair, NJ/Immaculate Conception) penalty kick.
The Pioneers outshot the Gothic Knights, 20-6. Junior midfielder
AMANFO ASSIBU (Bronx, N.Y/Sheepshead Bay) had the only NJCU shot on goal in his Gothic Knight debut.
WPU outshot NJCU, 8-2 in the first half and led 1-0 when
Hackett headed a
Matt Nigro (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) corner toward the mouth of the goal and junior
Andrew Tauriello (Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) cleaned up the loose ball on the line for his second career score. That was the eventual winning goal.
In the 55
th minute, WPU was awarded a penalty kick.

Hackett's low attempt. But in a play similar to the United States/Brazil World Cup game this summer, the Knights were whistled for a defender entering the box too soon. Senior

New Jersey City University will return to action when they play their 2011 home opener—the first of eight home contests—on Wednesday, September 21 at 4 p.m. against St. Joseph's College (NY) at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Field.
