NJCU DEFENSE LEADS KNIGHTS TO SWEEP OF JOHN JAY

- Michelle Rayo had a dozen digs as NJCU defeated John Jay for the 18th consecutive time.

Senior libero MICHELLE RAYO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) posted a match-high 12 digs and New Jersey City University limited John Jay College to only 10 kills as the Gothic Knights moved back above .500 with a 3-0 sweep (25-10, 25-13, 25-22) in a non-conference  match on Thursday evening at the Doghouse.
 
NJCU improved to 3-2 overall and defeated John Jay (0-10) for the 18th consecutive meeting since 1995. NJCU leads the all-time series, 22-2.
 
John Jay was limited to a -.208 attack percentage for the match (10-26-77) and committed 55 errors, while not hitting in positive territory in any of the three sets. NJCU had 20 kills and hit .091 (20-14-66), while defending 36 digs.
 
Also for the Knights, freshman setter CINDY GARCIA (West New York, NJ/Memorial) had 12 assists and five digs. Senior outside hitter TABITHA JORDAN (West New York, NJ/Memorial) added a match-best six kills with five digs.
 
Freshman middle blocker INDIGO HATCHER (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) contributed three aces and one solo block. Junior outside hitter  KIARA MARTINEZ (Newark, NJ/East Side) finished with four kills and five digs while hitting .231 (4-1-13). Freshman middle blocker JADE MEDLEY (Newark, NJ/Hudson Catholic) hit .333 (3-1-6) and had one block. John Jay did not have a player hit in positive territory.
 
NJCU led the entire first and second sets, seizing leads of 12-3 and 20-6 in the opening period. Leading 7-6 in the second set, the Knights scored the next eight points during the serve of Hatcher for a 14-6 margin, which widened to 18-9 after a pair of kills by Jordan.
 
In the third set there were 12 ties and five lead changes, and the Bloodhounds led 19-18 after one of the three aces in the set. A solo block by Medley put NJCU in front 20-19. After JJC tied it at 20-20, Medley slammed a kill, John Jay had an attack error and Garcia floored an ace for a 23-20 advantage, before the Knights won the match following a pair of attack errors by the hosts.
 
NJCU will play in the Devils Quad hosted by FDU-Florham on Friday, September 23. At 3 p.m., the Knights face host FDU, before challenging Arcadia University (5 p.m.) and Baruch College (7 p.m.) in a pair of neutral court contests.
