FDU SWEEPS NJCU IN QUAD MATCH OPENER

Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham used its distinct size advantage to post a .237 attack percentage and land 40 kills in a 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-11) sweep of New Jersey City University in the opening match of the Devils Quad, hosted by FDU on Friday afternoon at the Ferguson Rec Center.
 
FDU improved to 14-3 with the win, and would win the final two matches of the afternoon for its 15th and 16th wins. NJCU fell to 3-3 with the loss. FDU, which landed 13 aces overall, leads the all-time series, 9-3.
 
FDU was led by 5-foot-11 freshman opposite Andrea Peters (Highlands Ranch, CO) with 10 kills and a .421 percentage (10-2-19), while sophomore 5-foot-11 middle hitter Helena Riede (Haworth, NJ) added nine kills and hit .391 without an error (9-0-23). Freshman outside hitter Regan Watts (Royal Oak, MI) added seven kills (7-2-20, .250) and three aces and 6-foot-0 junior middle hitter Lisa Barenzano (Levittown, NY) hit .333 with seven winners (7-2-15).
 
Junior setter Nicole Weissert (Bay Shore, NY) had 18 assists, 10 digs and three aces. Senior libero Marta Matera (East Brunswick, NJ) and freshman outside hitter Momi Mariani (Kaneoue, HI) combined for 21 digs. Freshman setter Riley Brewer (La Mesa, CA) had 11 assists and seven digs.
 
NJCU hit .087 as a team with 19 kills, led by junior outside hitter KIARA MARTINEZ (Newark, NJ/East Side) with five kills and a .200 percentage (5-1-20), adding 12 digs and one ace. Senior libero MICHELLE RAYO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) posted a match-high 17 digs. Freshman setter CINDY GARCIA (West New York, NJ/Memorial) finished with 14 assists and nine digs.
  
Senior outside hitter TABITHA JORDAN (West New York, NJ/Memorial) finished with 12 digs and four kills and rookie middle hitter JADE MEDLEY (Newark, NJ/Hudson Catholic) chipped in four kills and one solo block.
 
FDU never trailed in the first two sets, landing 16 kills in the opening period for a 25-12 win before hitting .324 as a team in set two behind 13 kills. NJCU made a run in that second set, hitting .267 as a team with 12 kills (12-4-30), but couldn't get closer than 20-16 late in the period.
 
There were three ties and one lead change early in the final set before the Devils went on a 13-3 run to build a 16-6 lead and took the game, 25-11, winning the match in three.
