WALTER AVANS (Roselle Park, NJ/Union Catholic) rewrote the
New Jersey City University single-game scoring record books, coming off the bench to bury five goals and 10 points in 34 minutes of action, erasing school records in those categories that had stood for 37 and 36 years, respectively, as the Gothic Knights crushed Medgar Evers College, 12-1, on the second day of the 16
th Drew Fall Festival on Sunday at Ranger Stadium.
NJCU (1-1) wins its first game of the season and finished second in the tournament with a +4 goals differential. Host Drew University was 2-0 in the tournament and won the championship. Curry College was third (+1), also with a 1-1 mark, and Medgar Evers placed fourth.
The 12 goals and 11-goal margin of victory each represent the third highest totals in the 53-year history of the program. NJCU outshot the Cougars, 28-4, including 21-2 in the first half while building an 8-1 halftime margin.
Freshman forward
ANEST ROBERTS (Jersey City, NJ/Edison) netted a natural hat trick for the first three goals of his collegiate career, netting his three markers in a span of 8:43. It was the second fastest three consecutive goals in school history.
Avans, who had previously owned a share of the single-game school record after scoring four goals against York College (NY) on September 10, 2009, shattered the record held by four players. It was originally set by Hall-of-Famer
Jose (Pepe) Casais on October 30, 1974 and equaled by
Andrew Onyewuenyi in 1975 and
Alex Schuster in 1997.
Avans also eclipsed the points record of nine that
Onyewuenyi achieved against Bloomfield College on November 5, 1975 before being matched by all-time great
Chris Rosenthal in 2004.

JONNATHAN VELOZ (Newark, NJ/East Side) had a goal and two assists for a four-point effort. Freshman forward
RAPHAEL ARAUJO (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) scored the first goal of the game and of his career just 1:29 into the contest.

Araujo opened the scoring off a
Ceron cross at 1:29 before
Roberts scored the first three goals of his collegiate career at 7:11, 12:13 and 15:54. The first goal was unassisted off a giveaway and was the eventual game-winner before
Martis and
Andino made nice feeds for a 4-0 lead.
Avans, typically a starter for NJCU, entered as a substitution at the 16:19 mark and needed just 1:23 to get on the scoreboard, notching the first goal of his record-breaking day at the 17:42 mark.
Avans proceeded to score three consecutive goals for NJCU, adding tallies at 29:50 and 33:04 off feeds from
Veloz and
Carvalhoso for a 7-0 margin, notching a hat trick in a span of 17:10. It was his fourth career hat trick.
Veloz set up
Sequeira at the 41:00 mark for close-range goal and an 8-0 lead before Medgar Evers netted its lone goal at 43:12.
Coming out of halftime
, Avans bagged two goals in the first 3:39 of the second period to claim the single-game school record, with both goals coming in a span of 71 seconds. At 47:28, he picked off a pass outside the box and beat the opposing keeper 1-on-1. Then at 48:39,
Umanzor made a cross to the middle of the box where
Avans one-timed in his fifth goal of the game for an 10-1 lead, breaking the school record.
Avans was subbed out of the game midway through the 51
st minute.
At 54:41,
Lopes slipped a pass to
Veloz, beating the keeper for his first career goal.
Krychkowski completed the scoring at 88:11 for the final 11-goal margin of victory.
NJCU will travel to Randall's Island in New York, NY to face City College of New York in a non-conference game on Wednesday, September 7 at 4 p.m.
