ROWAN SWEEPS NJCU IN 2012 SEASON FINALE

- Kiara Martinez delivered 16 assists in the final match of her four-year Gothic Knight career.

Rowan University hit .351 as a team with 36 kills and only nine attack errors and the Profs clinched the No. 2 seed in the 2012 New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament, sweeping the NJAC finale from New Jersey City University, 3-0 (25-7, 25-15, 25-15), on October 25 at Esbjornson Gymnasium.
 
NJCU concludes its 30th season of intercollegiate women's volleyball with a 7-20 record for the third consecutive year, losing its final five matches. Rowan improved to 21-8 and 7-1 in the NJAC and will receive a bye into the NJAC Semifinals when the six-team conference tournament begins on October 30. Rowan leads the all-time series, 25-3.
 
Sophomore outside hitter JADE MEDLEY (Queens, NY/Hudson Catholic) collected eight of NJCU's 17 kills, hitting .174 (8-4-23) while senior setter KIARA MARTINEZ (Newark, NJ/East Side) contributed 16 assists and six digs. Sophomore libero CINDY GARCIA (West New York, NJ/Memorial) registered a match-high 12 digs—her 17th double-digit dig effort this season and 30th in two years.
 
Rowan was led by senior outside hitter Katie Havlicek (Midland Park, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) with 11 kills, 10 digs and four service aces while hitting .375 (11-2-4). Freshman  outside hitter/middle blocker Danielle Havlicek (Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) landed 10 kills and did not commit an error in 14 swings, finishing with an outstanding .714 hitting percentage. 
 
Freshman outside hitter/middle blocker Morgan Mende (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) added eight kills and a .500 clip (8-1-14), as she teamed with the two Havliceks for 29 of Rowan's 36 winners.
 
Sophomore middle blocker Nikki Binetti (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) registered five service aces and five of the other seven Prof kills. Junior setter Nicole Ciandella (Hoboken, NJ/Roselle Catholic) accumulated 30 assists and seven digs and junior libero Lauren Ruffalo (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) equaled the match-high with 12 digs.
 
Rowan hit an impressive .522 in the opening set with 12 kills and no errors in 23 attempts, while holding the Knights in the red (-.241, 1-8-29). Each team had nine kills in the second period, with the Profs posting a .250 percentage vs. NJCU's .133. Rowan scored 15 of its 25 points off its attack in the third set, collecting 15 kills and a .300 percentage.
 
The match was Rowan's designated 2012 Dig Pink match, in recognition of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
