KENILWORTH, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | The first home men's golf match in school history resulted in the first-ever head-to-head match victory as well.
New Jersey City University received individual medalist honors from rookie captain
BRIAN FERRANTE (Woodbine, NJ/Cape May Tech), and two other Gothic Knights recorded season low scores as NJCU defeated SUNY Old Westbury, 378-385, on Friday afternoon at the Galloping Hill Golf Course.
NJCU (1-1), which lost its only other head-to-head match in school history on April 6 against William Paterson University, had three of the top five scorers in the match against the Panthers. The par 68 course measured 5,253 yards from the white tees. It was the final event for NJCU in its second season of intercollegiate men's golf competition.
Ferrante (Woodbine, NJ/Cape May Tech), who led NJCU in every event he competed in during the 2011-12 season, shot a 40-43 and finished with an 83 (+15) on a wet golf course, tying for first place in the field. OW senior
Jason Kondra (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) shot a 41-42-83 to match
Ferrante.
Meanwhile, sophomore
CONRAD OKONGO (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln), playing in his final collegiate golf match before graduating in May, was fourth with a season-low 94 (+26)—just one shy of his career best—shooting a 48-46 to place fourth in the field. Freshman
FRANK RIVERA (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) broke 100 for the first time and finished fifth with a 95 (46-49) and a +27.
Ferrante shot par on six holes (392-yard par four 3
rd; 326-yard par-four 7
th; 226-yard par-four 8
th; 276-yard par-four 10
th; 135-yard par-three 11
th; and 279-yard par-four 18
th) and carded a birdie on the 331-yard par-four 4
th hole. A triple bogey on the sixth and 13
th holes prevented him from winning the event outright.
Kondra had five pars and a birdie on the 223-yard par-four ninth hole. Sophomore
DJ Stock (North Massapequa, NY/Plainedge) shot an 89 to finish third in the field (47-42).
Okongo produced par on three consecutive holes (223-yard par-four ninth; 276-yard par-four 10
th; 135-yard par-three 11
th) before paring the 333-yard par-four 17
th hole.
Rivera's only par was the ninth hole but he managed to stay out of trouble and shoot mostly bogey golf the entire round.
Sophomore
CHRIS TREZZA (Jersey City, NJ/St. Mary's (Jersey City)) had three pars on the 10
th, 14
th (367-yard par-four) and 17
