CAIRN SWEEPS NJCU IN DELVAL TRI-MATCH OPENER

- Marissa Scarpa had seven kills in the loss to Cairn in the opener of a tri-match on September 15.

Box Score DOYLESTOWN, PA (NJCUGothicKnights.com)...New Jersey City University led just twice and was swept by Cairn University, 3-0 (25-7, 25-18, 25-15) in the opening contest of a non-conference  tri-match, hosted by Delaware Valley College at the James Work Gymnasium on September 15.
 
NJCU (3-2) hit .075 in the match and never led in the first or third sets as Cairn (7-4) improved to 3-0 all-time in the series. Cairn, formerly known as the Philadelphia Biblical University Crimson Eagles, changed its school name and mascot this summer.
 
NJCU did get a nice effort from sophomore outside hitter MARISSA SCARPA (Kearny, NJ/Kearny), who had a team-best seven kills, hitting .208 (7-2-24). Sophomore setter CINDY GARCIA (West New York, NJ/Memorial) delivered 19 assists and nine digs while senior outside hitter BRITTANY EREZUMA (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) defended 11 digs, reaching double figure digs for the second match in a row and third of her career.
 
Sophomore middle blocker JADE MEDLEY (Queens, NY/Hudson Catholic) hit .364 with four kills and no errors (11 attempts). Sophomore middle blocker INDIGO HATCHER (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln), who had been playing well, did not make the trip.
 
The Highlanders were led by 6-foot-2 sophomore middle Rachel Johnson (Vaughn, WA), who hit .417 with 11 kills and only one error (24 attacks) with two blocks. Junior setter Erin Greenwood (Springfield, OH) dished a double-double of 28 assists and 13 digs while landing three aces.  Cairn hit .280 as a team (36-10-93).
 
Sophomore outside hitter Brigid Shehan (Media, PA) tallied 14 digs while junior outside Ashleigh Colomina (Allen Park, MI) floored four aces. Cairn had a 12-0 advantage in aces in the match.
 
Cairn had 10 kills in the opening set and hit .409 (10-1-22), jumping out to leads of 6-1, 9-2 and 16-3. Each team tallied 11 kills in the second set. NJCU led 10-7 before Cairn unleashed a 12-1 run to claim a 19-11 lead. The Knights committed six attack errors during the key stretch. The Highlanders collected 15 kills in the third set and never trailed or were tied.
