SCRANTON, PA (NJCUGothicKnights.com) |
Marywood University scored what proved to be the game-winning goal just 16 seconds after New Jersey City University had tied the game in the 71st minute as the Pacers snapped the Gothic Knights two-game winning streak, 3-2, in a non-conference game on September 22.

NJCU (6-3) suffers its first road loss of the season and has a two-game winning streak snapped while Marywood (3-4-1) ends a three-game losing streak. It was the first meeting between the schools in men's soccer. The Pacers held a 19-14 advantage in shots while NJCU had a 2-to-1 edge in corner kicks (6-3).

The game was delayed for nearly 30 minutes in the 69th minute due to severe weather, with the hosts leading, 2-1.

Sophomore forward MANNY MARTIS (Union, NJ/Union) scored his first career goal for NJCU in the 13th minute for a 1-0 lead before senior midfielder EDUARDO TEJADA (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington)  notched his fourth goal of the week (and season) and 10th point over his last two games to tie the game at 2-2. Freshman midfielder ALEC METSCH (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) produced his fourth assist of the season for the Knights.

Marywood received goals from freshman defender Zachary Oster (New London, PA), junior forward Christian Lawlor (Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) and freshman forward Daniel Hull (Chalftont, PA). Hull, Lawlor and sophomore defender Jamie Mangini (Philadelphia, PA) were credited with assists for the hosts.

Junior goalkeeper SHELDON PARKINSON (New Rochelle, NY/Herbert H. Lehman (Bronx, NY) made seven saves in a losing cause for NJCU.  Sophomore Austin Wright (York, PA) stopped two shots for the Pacers.

NJCU struck first at the 12:21 mark of the first half as Martis beat a pair of Marywood defenders before scoring on a hard angle to the far post. That 1-0 lead stood for more than 38 minutes and into halftime. MU had a 9-6 edge in shots at the break.

Marywood drew even at the 50:34 mark as Mangini received a corner kick and fired a shot across the box, which was redirected into the net by Oster to tie the game. It was his first career goal.

Before the storms came, the Pacers went ahead, 2-1, at the 60:38 mark as Hull slipped a thru ball to Lawlor for a breakaway against Parkinson. The goal was the third for Lawlor, who like Hull, would finish with a three-point day.

After the rain delay, NJCU took advantage of another long throw-in from Metsch, who unleashed a toss into the box that was headed in by Tejada at the 70:23 mark to knot the contest at 2-2.

But just 16 seconds later (70:39), Hull countered the game-tying goal with the eventual winner, his second tally of the season, as he netted a feed from Lawlor.

NJCU attempted to rally, attempting six of the final eight shots in the game, but couldn't put one away and did not have a shot in the final four minutes.

NJCU will play its third consecutive road game on Wednesday, September 26 at 4 p.m. when it visits Kean University in Union, NJ for a New Jersey Athletic Conference contest.
