MASPETH, NY (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Freshman midfielder
KAITLYN LIMA (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) had her foot in four of
New Jersey City University's scores, tallying two goals and two assists, and sophomore
BRITTANY HOFFMAN (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) notched her ninth career shutout while contributing two assists from her goalkeeper position as NJCU outshot York College (NY), 32-2, and blanked the Cardinals, 7-0, in a non-conference game on September 29 at the Metropolitan Oval.
NJCU improves to 4-6-2 while defeating York (2-6-1) by the same 7-0 score for the second consecutive year. NJCU has won both all-time meetings; it was the first match-up in New York. The Knights outshot York 23-0 in the first half (9-2 in the second period) and had a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
Hoffman, All-NJAC as a freshman last year, became the first goalkeeper in NJCU history to be credited with multiple assists in a game and her accomplishment could potentially be an NCAA record. Additional research in the next week will determine if another goalie has ever had more than two assists in a game. She made two saves for her second shutout of the season.
Lima, who scored the second and fourth goals and assisted on the final two, now has five goals, five assists and 15 points in her rookie campaign.
Sophomore defenders
DEVON WILLIAMS (Neptune City, NJ/Neptune) and
OLYMPIA SCIORTINO (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) each contributed a goal and an assist.
Senior
ANGELICA GLOVER (Union, NJ/Union Catholic) scored the first goal of the game—her third of the season—and the eventual game-winner while senior center midfielder
BRIANNA TAYLOR (Linden, NJ/Linden) notched her eighth goal of the season. Freshman
ANGELICA VALDERRAMA (Linden, NJ/Linden) tallied her first career goal in the win.
In a 0-0 game in the first half, NJCU quickly built a 4-0 lead with four goals in a span of 9:34 in the middle of the period, including the final three tallies over a stretch of just 2:47.
Glover got the scoring going at the 24:46 mark, beating a defender in a one-on-one off a pass from
Williams at midfield. The assist was No. 2 on the season for the NJCU co-captain.
What happened next was impressive as
Lima and
Taylor scored twice in just 12 seconds—31:13 and 31:25—to make it 3-0. The two goals in 12 seconds are just two seconds shy of the school record of 10 seconds set by current assistant coach
Katie Feehan on October 29, 2005, and the 14
th fastest consecutive goals by one team in NCAA Division III history.
Lima scored the first goal to make it 2-0 as
Hoffman made a long kick to midfield that set
Lima off on a breakaway. The assist was
Hoffman's first point as a collegian. Just 12 seconds later,
Taylor intercepted a pass and stuck a low kick into the right corner.
Lima made it 4-0 at the 34:00 mark off a cross into the middle of the box by
Sciortino, who tallied her first assist of the season after chipping in two as a freshman in 2011.
NJCU claimed a 5-0 lead just 2:27 before halftime as
Hoffman unleashed a long punt downfield from her box and
Williams gained possession of the booming kick, outrunning a defender before burying her fourth goal of the season, as
Hoffman notched her record second assist as a goalie.
NJCU added a pair of late goals to cap the scoring. At 81:04,
Lima crossed a ball into the middle that was headed in by
Sciortino for her second career goal. At 87:52,
Valderrama tallied her first career points, putting away a shot off a
Lima corner kick.
York rookie keeper
Kiara Libreros (Richmond Hill, NY) managed 13 saves against the heavy pressure of 20 shots on goal.
NJCU will return to action on Wednesday when it travels to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. for a non-conference game against King's College (Pa.)
