NJCU MEN’S SOCCER IMPROVES TO 2-1, BLANKS CCNY 2-0

- Raphael Araujo put away a goal for the third consecutive game and his insurance tally staked NJCU to the eventual final margin.

took advantage of an early own goal before sophomore forward RAPHAEL ARAUJO (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) scored for the third consecutive game to open the season as the Gothic Knight men's soccer team blanked City College of New York, 2-0, in a non-conference  contest on Wednesday on Randall's Island Field #51.
 
NJCU improves to 2-1 on the season while handing CCNY (1-1) its first defeat, outshooting the Beavers, 19-11. NJCU leads the all-time series, 9-1 (39-10 goals differential).
 
Araujo, who now leads the club with four goals after scoring twice as a rookie in 2011, was on the receiving end of a long throw in from rookie midfielder ALEC METSCH (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) late in the 42nd minute and knocked in the throw among a defensive scramble for the 2-0 lead at the 41:50 mark. Metsch earned his first career assist on the play.
 
Freshman goalkeeper KEVIN FUENTES (West New York, NJ/Memorial) made his second consecutive start and stopped four shots to record his first collegiate shutout while improving to 2-0.
 
Sophomore defender EDWIN UMANZOR (Linden, NJ/Linden) played a full 90 minutes in the back to help lead a defensive contingent that allowed just four shots on goal while contributing to the shutout.
 
CCNY senior keeper Tayfun Kucuk (Paterson, NJ/John F. Kennedy) made five saves for the Beavers to keep the deficit at two.
 
NJCU had quickly gained a 1-0 lead just 2:03 into action when another long throw in by Metsch deflected off the heel of a defender on a failed clear attempt and found its way in for an own goal.
 
The Knights led 2-0 at halftime on a 10-5 shots advantage before maintaining the two-goal shutout in the second half. Overall, 19 of 22 total players saw action in the victory for NJCU.
 
NJCU makes its 2012 home debut on Saturday, September 8 as the Knights host the two-day Liberty Cup Tournament at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field. NJCU will face Keystone College in the 3:30 p.m. game after Baruch College and FDU-Florham square off in the 1 p.m. opening game.
