JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University's men's soccer program will open the 2012 home portion of its schedule this weekend when the Gothic Knights welcome three regional schools to the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field for the annual Liberty Cup tournament.
NJCU (2-1), winners of two straight games, will host Baruch College (0-1-1) of the City University of New York Athletic Conference, Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham (1-2) of the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom, and Keystone College (1-1) of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) in the two-day event from September 8-9.
The tournament is in the classic style format with four pre-determined matches. On September 8, Baruch and FDU will meet at 1 p.m. followed by NJCU and Keystone at 3:30 p.m. On September 9, Baruch and Keystone square off at 12 p.m., following by NJCU and FDU-Florham at 2:30 p.m.
NJCU has hosted the event in either a men's or women's format in every season since 2004, except for 2008. This will be the sixth men's Liberty Cup and the first since 2009. The Knights own an all-time 9-1-0 record in the tournament, winning the event in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2009. North Carolina Wesleyan College claimed the other title in 2007.
The women's soccer program has also hosted the event in 2010 and 2011, winning the 2010 title before the 2011 tournament was shortened due to flooding.
FDU-Florham will be participating for the third time. The Devils are 4-0-0 all-time in the event, twice finishing second based on tiebreakers in 2004 and 2009. Baruch and Keystone are both first-time participants.
With the tournament conducted as a classic style format, the winner of the tournament will be based on points. Teams will receive three points for a win and one for a tie (none for a loss). Tiebreakers, in order of significance, are head-to-head result (if applicable), fewest goals against, goal differential, total goals scored, and fewest yellow cards accumulated.
At this completion of the tournament there will be a championship 'cup' presented, a runner-up trophy, a most valuable player award and an 11-man All-Tournament Team.
“I'm excited to get the home season open and I'm looking forward to four good matches,” said first-year head coach
Patrick Snyder. “Hopefully we'll have some nice weather so the fans can enjoy what we expect to be a great tournament.”
