junior forward ALNISA HERNAIZ (Irvington, NJ/Irvington) produced her seventh double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds and sophomore point guard ASHLEY VAZQUEZ (Jersey City, NJ/Marist) scored a game-high 16 points as the Gothic Knights led from start to finish and swept a season series from Kean University for the first time in 14 years with a 64-53 victory at the Harwood Arena on January 26.

NJCU (5-15) sweeps the season series from Kean (4-14) for the first time since winning series in back-to-back years from 1997-98 and 1998-99. The game was a non-conference contest as the Cougars are not part of the league standings this season due to a ruling of the NJAC Board of Athletic Administrators.

“This was a great team win today,” said second-year coach Amy Mulligan.  “We executed the game plan completely. We saw different players step up in different ways. We made up for our shooting by knocking down free throws and this has been something our team has been working to improve upon.”

Not only did NJCU knock down free throws but did so in historic fashion—converting what is believed to be a school record for free throw accuracy in a game with 20 or more opportunities. The Knights shot 88.5 percent from the line and buried 23 of 26 chances.

More to come.
