HUNTER TOO MUCH FOR NJCU IN 3-0 SWEEP

- Marissa Scarpa was NJCU's best player in the loss, landing seven kills with eight digs.

Box Score NEW YORK, NY (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Hunter College had a 33-15 differential in kills and served 16 aces as the Hawks swept New Jersey City University, 3-0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-18) in a non-conference  women's volleyball match on October 8 at the Hunter SportsPlex.
 
Hunter (8-9) hit .269 as a team, committing just 12 attack errors while limiting the Gothic Knights (5-13) to a .015 team hitting percentage (15-14-68). NJCU committed 44 errors in the loss.

Junior outside hitter MARISSA SCARPA (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) was NJCU's top player, landing nearly half of its kills. She hit .143, finishing with seven kills (7-4-21) and eight digs. Senior libero CINDY GARCIA (West New York, NJ/Memorial) defended eight digs. Junior setter MADELYN LEON (West New York, NJ/Memorial) totaled nine assists.
 
Lucia Stosic was dominant in leading the Hawks. She hit .750 with nine kills and no attack errors (12 swings), while adding four blocks (two solo). Taylor Kordich added a .412 percentage and nine kills (9-2-17) offensively while splitting time at setter, where she dished 14 assists and five digs.
 
Much of the damage was done behind the service line where Brianna O'Hagan and Camille Newkirk each uncorked six aces. Also for Hunter, Kristine Ciurcina finished with 16 assists and nine digs. Karolina Gajda tallied six kills (6-1-19, .263).
 
The Hawks had exactly 11 kills in all three sets, hitting .588 in game one where the hosts made only one error in 17 attempts. Hunter never trailed in the opening set, landing five aces. Leading 13-8, the Hawks took control by scoring 12 of the final 14 points of the game.
 
Hunter built an 8-1 lead in set two and was never challenged, serving six aces. In game three, the Knights led 5-4 before Hunter responded with a 7-0 run to claim an 11-5 advantage. Once NJCU closed within three, 12-9, Hunter ran off five consecutive points for a 17-9 cushion before prevailing, 25-18. Hunter had five aces in the final game.
 
NJCU is back on the court on Thursday, October 10 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Rutgers-Newark in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
