New Jersey City University sophomore right-hander
KEVIN DEMAURO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) struck out seven batters in seven innings, allowing just three hits and no earned runs and the Gothic Knights scored five times in the fourth inning to claim an 8-4 non-conference victory over host Washington & Lee University in game two of a doubleheader on February 16 at Smith Field.
NJCU (1-2), which had lost the first two games of the trip by one run each, held the Generals (3-1) to six hits for the second consecutive game and handed W&L its first loss of the season.
DeMauro, who went 2-4 as a rookie against tough competition in 2012, improved to 1-1 on the season, fanning seven of the 28 batters he faced while scattering three hits in seven innings, including two singles, against two walks. He struck out two of the first three batters he faced and four of the first six, while retiring seven consecutive batters to start the day.
Senior center fielder
MICHAEL PATTERSON (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) had his third consecutive multi-hit effort to start the season, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs to increase his average to .583. He has 11 multi-hit games since joining the team last season. He had his second triple in three games.
NJCU collected 14 hits overall and all 10 positions players who saw action tallied at least one. Sophomore shortstop
MICHAEL MARTUCCI (Bayonne, NJ/Saint Peter's Prep) was 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI while freshman catcher
ANDREW NIECH (Avenel, NJ/Colonia) was 2-for-5 and also generated a double, run and RBI.
Sophomore right fielder
MATTHEW WAGNER (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) scored twice and senior left fielder
ANDREW RIVERA (Edison, NJ/Edison) added a triple.
Sophomore righty
ALEX WEINSTEIN (Colonia, NJ/JFK-Iselin), who started the day at first base and had a run and RBI,
egistered his first career save, entering in the bottom of the eighth inning with NJCU leading 7-4, and struck out two versus two walks, while recording the final four outs of the game. He was the fourth pitcher used by NJCU.
Senior shortstop
Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, NC) was the lone offensive standout for the Generals, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs, a two-run homerun and a double. Senior first baseman
Alex Maragos (Chicago, IL) had a triple.
Sophomore righty
Matt Hedberg (Charlotte, NC) started for W&L and allowed five runs and seven hits with one K in 3.2 innings, in suffering the loss (0-1). He was the first of four pitchers utilized by the hosts.
With the game scoreless in the top of the fourth, NJCU strung together five runs on six hits while 10 men came to the plate. Senior second baseman
PETE SENYSZYN (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) led off with a single, advanced to third on an error that didn't impact the rest of the inning, and scored on a
Rivera sacrifice fly. Junior designated hitter
MATT MATLOSZ (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) singled with one out and scored when
Martucci doubled to left center.
Niech followed with a double to left to make it 3-0.
Wagner knocked in
Niech with an RBI single.
Patterson followed with a two-out RBI single for the fifth run and forced the Generals to call in reinforcements on the mound.
W&L scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth.
Stutts led off with a double, advanced to third on a passed ball and later scored on a wild pitch.
NJCU added to its advantage in the eighth inning.

Patterson had a bases loaded single to center.
Senyszyn made it 7-1 with a groundout.
The Generals scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to make it more interesting. After
Salley led off with a double,
Stutts homered to left field.
Maragos tripled and scored when senior catcher
Luke Deary (Carlisle, MA) grounded out. With two outs and two men on after being hit by pitches,
Weinstein entered in relief and ended the threat with a strikeout.
Weinstein helped his own cause on the mound with an RBI groundout that scored his replacement at first baseman, junior
MIKE CASIANO (Newark, NJ/North 13th Street), who had singled in his first plate appearance of the season. In the bottom of the ninth,
Weinstein got two quick outs with a K and ground out before walking two batters, but sealed the win when he induced a fly ball to left by
Maragos .
NJCU will wrap up the four-game trip to southwestern Virginia on Sunday, February 17 at 1 p.m. when it visits Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Va.
