New Jersey City University senior right-hander
ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) struck out 10 batters in a masterful five-hit shutout performance as the Gothic Knights blanked the University of Dallas, 3-0, in game two at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic played on March 11 at the Lee County Sports Complex Field#4.
NJCU scored twice in the first inning to even its spring trip record at 1-1; Dallas falls to 1-9 with the loss.
O'Beirne walked just three batters in seven innings. There were no extra base hits in the game for either side.
Senior third baseman
REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) had multiple hits for the second straight game, going 2-for-3 with a run.
Satz now has 158 career hits—two shy of a share of third place in school history and three out of second.
Senior shortstop
GABRIELLE RIVERA (Teaneck, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) was 2-for-3 as five players accounted for NJCU's seven hits. Junior catcher
MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) and freshman right fielder
THALIA GARCIA (Ridgefield, NJ/North Bergen) each went 1-for-3 with one run.
Rookie pitcher
Nicole Frazier (Edmond, OK) pitched well for Dallas but suffered her second loss of the season (0-2), allowing seven hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. Senior shortstop
Brittany Castro (Houston, TX) was 2-for-3.
NJCU would once again have a hot start in the bottom of the first as
Satz led off with a single up the middle,
Garcia bunted her way on base and
Satz advanced to third on a flyout before
Garcia stole second.
Satz would come home on an RBI groundout by rookie designated hitter
JULIANA JACOBSON (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) before
Garcia raced home on a passed ball.
Pitching dominated the middle innings before NJCU added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
Bariso led off the frame with a triple to center before scoring on an RBI single to left center by second baseman
MAXINE KAMINSKI (Kearny, NJ/Kearny), in just her second game of collegiate softball after four years on the NJCU women's basketball team.
Dallas' best scoring chance came in the top of the first when it tallied three of its five hits but
Castro was thrown out at the plate on a throw from sophomore
center fielder TAYLOR SETAR (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) to
Bariso to end the inning. Dallas stranded two runners after a pair of walks in the fourth.
O'Beirne retired the final six batters of the game, including three via strikeout, to secure the shutout.
NJCU returns to action on day two of its spring trip on Tuesday, March 12 when it face Rockford College at 5 p.m. followed by Wisconsin Lutheran College at 7 p.m. Fan can follow the live stats of the game on NJCUGothicKnights.com or via Twitter at the @NJCU_Athletics handle.
