New Jersey City University senior third baseman
REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) notched a pair of hits to climb into second place in program history in the category, but Drew University scored four runs in the bottom of the first and five more in the second as the Rangers cruised by the Gothic Knights, 10-1 in five innings, in the second game played by NJCU on March 13 at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Cape Coral Sports Complex #2.
After starting the season 0-4, Drew University won its fourth straight to improve to 4-4 while NJCU dropped its second straight game and fell to 3-3.
Satz, who was a combined 4-for-5 in two games on Wednesday, went 2-for-3 in a leadoff role to increase her career hits total to 162. She entered the game in a share of third place in school history and eclipsed
Dana Holtje (1994-97, 161 hits) for second place in the programs annals; the all-time record is 206 by
Jen Barletta (1998-01).
Junior catcher
MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) scored the Gothic Knights only run of the game in a 1-for-2 effort and had one double. Senior infielder
GABRIELLE RIVERA (Teaneck, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) was also 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Rookie
JULIANA JACOBSON (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) made her collegiate pitching debut after senior
ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) started the first five games of the trip. She suffered the loss, allowing seven earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts versus three walks.
Sophomore pitcher
Amy Benedict (Howell, NJ/Freehold Township) picked up her second win of the season 2-1 by allowing one earned run and five hits while striking out three NJCU batters without issuing a walk.
Drew was led by senior shortstop
Jeramie Barletta (Madison, NJ/Madison) with three runs and two RBIs in a 3-for-3 effort. Sophomore right fielder
Casey Reggiani (Whippany, NJ/ Whippany Park) drove in two RBIs and scored a run while sophomore third baseman
Kate McNamara (Levittown, NY) and
Benedict each had two RBIs;
McNamara was 2-for-2 Freshman second baseman
Kristin Zeigler (Collegeville, PA) had the other RBI for Drew.
Also for Drew, junior left fielder
Lexie Forsell (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro) and sophomore catcher
Rebecca Hutsebaut (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) each scored two runs while sophomore center fielder
Antoinette Tover (South El Monte, CA) and sophomore first baseman
Laura D'Ornellas (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) both scored.
Drew would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when
Barletta singled to shortstop with the bases loaded to score
Tovar.
Reggiani reached on a dropped fly by the left fielder that scored
Forsell. A
McNamara single to the shortstop made it 3-0 before
Benedict knocked in the second unearned run of the inning with a sacrifice fly and a 4-0 advantage.
The bottom of the second would not get any easier for NJCU as two hit batters and a walk loaded the bases with one out and
Barletta singled to the shortstop for a fifth run. For the second consecutive inning,
Reggiani reached on a dropped fly by the left fielder, this time scoring two runs. Drew added a fourth run when
Benedict was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Reggiani would score the final Ranger run of the inning by tagging up on a
Zeigler sac fly.
NJCU had back-to-back one out singles in the third but couldn't plate a run. Trailing 9-0 in the top of the fourth, NJCU got on the scoreboard as
Bariso led off with a double and scored on a
Rivera single down the left field line.
But Drew added a 10
th run on a
McNamara RBI single in the top of the fifth and when NJCU failed to score in the bottom of the inning, the game ended via the eight-run rule.
