 | New Jersey City University senior right-hander ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) had her fifth consecutive quality start to open the 2013 season and senior third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) moved into a share of third place in school history with 160 hits, but the Gothic Knights dropped their second one-run decision in five games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, falling to Ohio Wesleyan University, 2-1, on March 13 at the Cape Coral Sports Complex #1.

NJCU had the tying and winning runs in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the seventh but failed to capitalize.

Junior catcher MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) hit her 13th career homerun in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 1-1 before OWU (4-1) scored in the fourth and kept the Gothic Knights (3-2) scoreless over the final five innings. The Battling Bishops lead the all-time series—all games played in Florida—5-0.

Satz went 2-for-2 in a leadoff role and accounted for half of NJCU's four hits. With 160 career hits, Satz tied former teammate MEGAN GINTER (2009-12) and Sharyn Hunchak (1995-98) for third in school history. She had one steal in defeat.

Bariso was 1-for-2 with a run and RBI and junior second baseman MAXINE KAMINSKI (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) had the other Gothic Knight hit.

O'Beirne (3-2) had her 21-inning shutout streak end in the top of the first when OWU gained a 1-0 lead.  She suffered her second loss of the season (3-2), allowing only two earned runs and eight hits, including six singles, with three strikeouts versus three walks over 84 pitches.

Junior pitcher Dani Haley (Maumee, OH) earned the win for the Battling Bishops, striking out 11 NJCU batters against two walks to improve to 2-1 this season. She allowed one earned run and four hits over 88 pitches.

Senior third baseman Stefanie Rieder (Logan, OH) was 2-for-3 with a RBI for Ohio Wesleyan and senior catcher Brooke Nethers (Newark, OH) was 2-for-3 with a steal. Haley went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Rookie first baseman Sarah Flint (Westerville, OH) and sophomore left fielder Chelsea Denman (Pendleton, IN) each scored a run for the Battling Bishops.

Ohio Wesleyan would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when Haley doubled to center field to score Flint, who reached on a two-out double. NJCU responded in the top of the second inning when Bariso blasted a 0-1 leadoff pitch over the left field fence to tie the game at 1-1.

Neither team would score until the bottom of the fourth when Rieder singled to right field to score Denman, who walked, with the eventual winning run and a 2-1 lead. O'Beirne would strand the bases loaded as OWU left nine on during the game.

After O'Beirne kept the Bishops in check the rest of the game, NJCU had its chance to tie or win in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman designated player JULIANA JACOBSON (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) walked and Bariso was hit by a pitch before both were sacrificed into scoring position. But Haley struck out the final two batters of the game swinging, fanning sophomore center fielder TAYLOR SETAR (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) on a 2-2 count before rookie first baseman FAITH ELY (Vienna, NJ/Hackettstown) was retired on five pitches.
