 | Washington College (Md.) scored seven runs in the fifth inning to break open a one-run game as the Shoremen defeated New Jersey City University, 12-3, in a non-conference baseball game on March 23 at Athey Baseball Park.

NJCU (7-5) had its four-game winning streak snapped while Washington, a member of the Centennial Conference, improved to 8-7. It was the first meeting on record between the schools in any varsity sport.

Senior first baseman Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs for WC while freshman catcher Brian Quadrino (Smithtown, NY) collected three RBIs and a run in a 2-for-3 effort.

Sophomore third baseman/shortstop MICHAEL MARTUCCI (Bayonne, NJ/Saint Peter's Prep) was NJCU's lone player with multiple hits, going 2-for-5 with one RBI.

Senior center fielder MICHAEL PATTERSON (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) had a hit, RBI and run scored and reached base for the 14th consecutive game dating to last season.

Also for the Shoremen, senior third basemen Joe Willis (Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Regional) was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and one RBI and freshman outfielder Bryan Baquer (Woodbridge, VA) was 1-for-2 with three runs scored. Junior infielder Nick Marinelli (Ellicott City, MD) finished 2-for-3 and sophomore right fielder Scott Matthews (Goshen, NY/Don Bosco Prep (NJ)) collected two RBIs.

The Shoremen got a solid effort from senior left-hander Kyle Aldrich (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills Regional), who fired 6.2 innings one one-run, four-hit baseball, with three strikeouts and three walks for his second win (2-1). Freshman right-hander Pete Breslauer (Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain Lakes) threw 1.1 innings in relief, allowing just one hit, with a strikeout and walk; freshman lefty John Beck (East Hanover, NJ/Montclair Kimberley Academy) pitched the final inning, allowing two unearned runs on two hits and a walk.

NJCU sophomore righty KEVIN DEMAURO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) had allowed just two runs in the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth. He took the loss (1-2), allowing six earned runs and 10 hits in 4.1 innings, walking three.

NJCU used three pitchers in relief. Rookie righty TOMMY TRELA (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) was outstanding in 1.2 innings, striking out three of the six batters he faced against just one hit. Freshman NICK DEMARCO (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) did not allow a hit in a scoreless eighth inning of work.

WC took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when sophomore designated hitter Dennis Thomas (Baltimore, MD) singled home Willis, who reached on an error. Senior left fielder ANDREW RIVERA (Edison, NJ/Edison) led off the top of the fourth with a single and sophomore right fielder MATTHEW WAGNER (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) tied the game when he slipped a two-out single up the middle.

WC regained the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth when Baquer, who led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second and scored when Quadrino singled down the right field line before the inning ended on a double play.

But the hosts put the game out of reach when 11 men came to the plate in the fifth, scoring seven runs on five hits and an error. With the bases loaded and one out after an error and an intentional walk, Matthews gave Washington a 4-1 lead with a two-run single to right before Cotterell followed with a two-run double over the third base bag to increase the margin to 6-1. A two-run triple to right by Quadrino made it 8-1 before he scored the third unearned run of the game for the Shoremen and seventh of the inning, on a double down the right field line by Willis.

The Shoremen added three runs in the seventh, including an RBI single by Cotterell and a later run on a wild pitch for a 12-1 advantage. NJCU did score twice in the ninth—an RBI single by Patterson and a two-out RBI double by Martucci.

NJCU will next face John Jay College on Tuesday, March 26 at 3:30 p.m. in a game that has been moved from Brooklyn, NY to NJCU's Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.
