JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com)
 | Freshman designated player JULIANA JACOBSON (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) hit her first career homerun in game one and combined for three hits and three RBIs to fuel New Jersey City University to a softball doubleheader sweep of the College of Mount Saint Vincent on March 26, winning the opener 8-2 before claiming the nightcap, 2-1 in six innings before darkness overwhelmed the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.

NJCU won without two-time First-Team All-New Jersey Athletic Conference third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) and improved to 8-6 on the year, while Mount Saint Vincent fell to 4-10 overall. The Gothic Knights lead the all-time series, 7-0.

Jacobson, who had four hits and two RBIs in her first 31 career at bats, had a breakout effort, batting a combined 3-for-5 with a two-run homer in the opening game. Junior catcher MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) scored three runs in the twin bill.

Senior right-hander ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) was the winning pitcher in both ends of the doubleheader—allowing five hits in the opener and six in the nightcap—and won her 30th career game to move past current pitching coach Andrea Delucrezia for third place in school history.

outhit the Dolphins, 10-5.

Jacobson was 1-for-2 in the win with two RBIs, two runs and two walks while Bariso walked and scored two runs in a 1-for-2 effort. A pair of Gothic Knights women's basketball captains—junior third baseman MAXINE KAMINSKI (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) and senior short stop GABRIELLE RIVERA (Teaneck, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) each produced an RBI and run in 2-for-4 efforts.

Also for NJCU, rookie right fielder THALIA GARCIA (Ridgefield, NJ/North Bergen) and freshman second baseman STEPHANIE MURPHY (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) scored the other two runs.

Senior pitcher ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) picked up the win (7-5). In 7.0 innings, she allowed just five hits, two earned runs while striking out five batters versus three walks.

Sophomore pitcher Kathleen Davis (Beacon, NY) suffered the loss for Mount Saint Vincent (1-4), allowing eight runs (five earned) while striking out nine batters (five walks). Offensively, she drove in a run in a 1-for-4 effort.

Rookie shortstop Joann Guerra (Bronx, NY) was 1-for-2 two walks and her first career homerun (one RBI) while freshman center fielder Danielle Maffei (Valhalla, NY) scored the other CMSV run.

NJCU got on the scoreboard in the first as Jacobson blasted her first collegiate home run to left center to score Bariso, who walked with two outs.

In the third, Garcia led off with a bunt single, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Kaminski singled down the left field line. Rivera would strike out but reached as the Dolphins' catcher was unable to block the ball and Jacobson, who earlier in the inning walked and stole second, would score on the wild pitch to make it a 4-0 NJCU lead.

The Dolphins would finally get on the scoreboard in the fifth as Davis doubled to center to score Maffei, who singled with two away.

NJCU responded in the bottom of the fifth with three runs to build a 7-1 advantage as Kaminski and Rivera would both score on passed balls. Murphy notched her first career hit in the inning and scored the third run on CMSV's second error of the game.

In the sixth, NJCU scored an insurance run as Rivera produced a two-out double to right field to score Bariso, who singled to third base. Guerra homered to left center with two outs in the seventh for the Dolphins' second run.

In game two, NJCU scored single runs in the first two innings and limited CMSV to six hits, en route to the six-inning victory.

O'Beirne picked up her eighth win of the season (8-5) as she scattered six singles and one earned run while striking out five batters versus one walk.

Jacobson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Garcia drove in the other NJCU run. Junior center fielder CASEY PEREZ (West New York, NJ/Academy of the Holy Angels) was 2-for-3 in the win. Bariso and sophomore left fielder TAYLOR SETAR (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) each scored a run.

For Mount Saint Vincent, rookie pitcher Kathryn Dalton (Northampton, PA) suffered the one-run loss, allowing one earned run and nine hits in five innings. She struck out seven while not walking a batter over 92 pitches. Maffei scored the Dolphins' only run of the game in a 1-for-3 effort.

In the opening frame, Bariso reached on a two-out error, advanced to second on the error and third on a passed ball, and NJCU made the Dolphins pay as Jacobson singled to center for a 1-0 lead. In the second, the Gothic Knights would strike again; Setar doubled to left for her second hit of the season, stole third, and scored on a groundout by Garcia for the eventual winning run. NJCU left nine runners on base in the game and didn't score again.

Trailing 2-0, Mount Saint Vincent would attempt a rally in the third as Maffei singled, stole second, advanced to third on a ground ball, and scored on a passed ball. A later single would have plated the run.

The Dolphins' final chance to take the lead came in the fifth as Davis and Dalton singled with one out and advanced into scoring position, before Setar made a catch in foul territory down the left field line to end the threat. NJCU had back-to-back leadoff singles in the sixth before the game was called due to darkness.

NJCU will look to extend its two-game winning streak on Thursday, March 28, when it hosts Brooklyn College for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
