JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com)
 | Kean University scored its most runs in a game since 1998 and used two big innings to sweep a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader from New Jersey City University on April 2, winning 21-1 and 11-3, twice in five innings, at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex. NJCU fell below .500 for only the second time this season.

Kean improved to 12-8 and 2-2 in the conference and leads the all-time series, 45-6. NJCU, playing its sixth and seventh games without two-time First-Team All-NJAC third baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown), lost its third straight as it fell to 9-10 and 0-4 in conference play.

***GAME 1: KEAN 21, NEW JERSEY CITY 1 ***
In the opener, Kean had 15 batters come to the plate in a 10-run second inning en route to the 20-run victory. It was the most runs by an opponent since a 24-4 home loss to FDU-Florham on April 17, 2006. FDU scored 10 runs in the third inning of that game. Kean outhit NJCU, 16-1 and had three triples.

Kean led 3-0 after one inning and 13-0 after two before adding two runs in the third and three runs in the fourth and fifth frames. NJCU's lone run came in the third inning when sophomore left fielder TAYLOR SETAR (Carteret, NJ/Carteret), who was 1-for-2 with a double and run, led off with her third two-base hit of the year and scored on a bunt by rookie right fielder THALIA GARCIA (Ridgefield, NJ/North Bergen). The game ended after five innings due to the eight-run rule

On the mound, sophomore righty Courtney Yard (Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central) put on a brilliant performance as she tossed a complete-game one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and three walks while improving to 5-6 on the year. Offensively, she was even more deadly as she produced seven RBIs and two runs in a 3-for-4 effort.

Along with Yard, most of the damage was done junior catcher Jill Martin (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan), who was 2-for-3 with five RBIs and a run while junior outfielder Sandra Binkiewicz (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) drove in three runs and scored twice in a 3-for-3 effort.  Yard, Martin and Binkiewicz each tripled and Yard added a double for a pair of extra-base hits.

Junior shortstop Kelly Moorehead (Hicksville, NY) scored four runs and drove in two RBIs in a 2-for-4 effort. Junior right fielder Megan Cegielski (Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central) scored three runs while rookie Casey Glatts (Aston, PA), sophomore Cat Riechers (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) and senior left fielder Kelsey Hannan (Saddle Brook, NJ/Immaculate Conception) each scored two runs.

Also for Kean, senior second baseman Katie Schuh (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) supplied an RBI and run in a 2-for-4 effort. Freshman Gianna DeCesare (Staten Island, NY) and senior third baseman Courtney Melchionna (Linden, NJ/Linden) scored the other two Cougar runs.

Senior pitcher ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) suffered the loss as she allowed 18 earned runs and 16 hits in 5.0 innings with four strikeouts and four walks.

Kean scored three runs right away in the first, the latter two when Yard blasted a triple to right field to score Glatts and Moorehead.

Already leading 3-0, the Cougars would tack on 10 runs in the second with Binkiewicz and Moorehead scoring the first two by being walked with the bases loaded. Glatts reached on a fielding error by the third baseman to score Cegielski before Yard singled to left center to score Moorehead and Binkiewicz. A bases-loaded triple down the right field line by Martin would give the Cougars an 11-0 lead as Melchionna, Yard and Glatts all scored. Martin stole home and Binkiewicz would add the final run of the inning with a single through the left side to score Hannan.

In the third, Kean would be limited to two runs as Riechers scored on a Martin sac fly and Schuh singled up the middle to score DeCesare for a 15-0 lead. A two-run double to left in the fourth by Yard extended the lead to 17-1 before scoring on a single by Martin. A Binkiewicz triple in the fifth inning made it 19-1 before Moorehead and Yard drove in the final two runs.

***KEAN 11, NEW JERSEY CITY 3***
In the nightcap, Kean scored seven runs in the first as 10 batters came to the plate. NJCU would score single runs in the first, third and fourth innings before the Cougars put the game away with four runs in the top of the fifth. Kean had a 10-5 edge in hits.

Glatts picked up her fourth win of the season (4-2), allowing three earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts and three walks.  Offensively, she was 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

In game two, the top performer for the Cougars was Cegielski with three RBIs and a run in a 2-for-4 effort. Schuh was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs while Moorehead drove in two runs and scored in a 1-for-2 outing. Martin scored twice and drove in a run in a 1-for-2 effort and Yard, who played second and first base, was 2-for-3 with a run.

Also for Kean, Binkiewicz and freshman Tiffany Varriello (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) each produced a run and RBI. Melchionna scored the other Cougar run.

O'Beirne suffered her second loss of the day (9-9) as she allowed eight earned runs and 10 hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 5.0 innings.

In defeat, junior center fielder CASEY PEREZ (West New York, NJ/Academy of the Holy Angels) added one run and one RBI. Junior catcher MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) and freshman designated hitter JULIANA JACOBSON (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) each drove in a run while Garcia and junior shortstop GABRIELLE RIVERA (Teaneck, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) scored the other Gothic Knight runs.

Kean struck right away in the first as Moorehead doubled to right center to score Binkiewicz and Schuh. The Cougars loaded the bases and Glatts and Yard would both score on walks to Varriello and Martin—the third and fourth walks of the inning—for a 4-0 lead. A two-run single by Schuh scored Varriello and Melchionna for a 6-0 lead before Cegielski double to left center to score Martin for a 7-0 advantage.

NJCU would get on the scoreboard in the first on a Bariso single to left center to score Perez, who walked and stole second.
In the third, the Knights added a second run when Jacobson singled to right center to plate Garcia, who was hit by a pitch with one out. In the fourth inning, NJCU made it a 7-3 game when Rivera led off with a single before scoring on a single to shortstop by Perez—the Knights' third hit of the inning.

But Kean put the game away in the fifth inning. A two-run double to left by Cegielski scored Schuh and Martin. Binkiewicz followed with a ground out to that scored Cegielski and an RBI single by Glatts allotted enough runs for the eight-run rule.

NJCU will attempt to shake off the losses on Thursday, April 4 when it hosts the College of Staten Island for a 3:30 pm non-conference doubleheader in the 13th and 14th games of the 14-game home stand.
