BRYN MAWR SWEEPS NJCU IN TRI-MATCH OPENER

- Jade Medley hit .538 in defeat for the Knights.

Box Score BRYN MAWR, PA (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Junior middle hitter JADE MEDLEY (Queens, NJ/Hudson Catholic) hit .538 and landed eight kills but New Jersey City University women's volleyball fell to 0-3 to start the 2013 campaign, dropping the opening match of a tri-match to host Bryn Mawr College, 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-20) on August 31 at Class of 1958 Gym. It was the first-ever meeting between the schools.
 
While most of the match was statistically even, the serving of the Owls coupled with the serve reception of the Gothic Knights was the difference with Bryn Mawr (1-0) uncorking 17 aces in its 2013 debut.
 
For NJCU, Medley had nearly half of her team's winners, finishing with a line of 8-1-13 and three blocks (one solo). Freshman middle hitter SHEGE HAXHAJ (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) and junior opposite ASHLEY LATUSHKO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) each added identical lines of five kills (three errors) on 12 attempts (.167) and Latushko chipped in eight digs and two aces.
 
Due to an injury, senior CINDY GARCIA (West New York, NJ/Memorial) moved from libero to setter, where she played the last two seasons, and tallied 18 assists and seven digs. Freshman JESSICA PEREZ (Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) provided nine digs.
 
The Owls were led offensively by Sarah Gates with eight kills (8-4-19, .211) and two blocks while Zoe Holman landed a match-high five aces. Eight different BWC players tallied an ace, including three by Caroline Cosby. Setter Danielle Preziuso finished with 17 assists, eight digs and two aces. Samantha Abbott collected five kills, hit .286 (5-1-14) and added two blocks.
 
BWC hit .333 in set one, owning an 11-5 edge in kills. Leading 16-14, the hosts scored nine of the final 10 points of the game for a 25-15 win. NJCU had a 10-7 differential in winners in set two in defeat. NJCU trailed 16-11 and 19-16 in the third set before rallying to tie it at 19-19. From there, the hosts scored six of the final seven points to seal the sweep.
