Box Score BRYN MAWR, PA (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Rookie libero JESSICA PEREZ (Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) defended 19 digs to spark New Jersey City University defensively, but the Gothic Knight women's volleyball team completed a stretch of four matches in less than 24 hours to open the 2013 season without a victory, falling to Wesley College, 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-18), in a neutral court match on August 31 at Bryn Mawr College's Class of 1958 Gym.

Wesley (1-0) and NJCU (0-4), meeting for the first time in their respective volleyball histories, each tallied 29 kills. The Wolverines landed nine aces.

Perez also contributed offensively, tallying three kills in four swings. In defeat for NJCU, junior middle hitter JADE MEDLEY (Queens, NJ/Hudson Catholic) led the club with seven kills, hitting .222 (7-3-18) and stuffed four blocks, including three solo rejections.

Junior INDIGO HATCHER (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) added six kills (6-3-18, .167). Senior setter CINDY GARCIA (West New York, NJ/Memorial) finished with 24 assists.

For Wesley, Lindsay DiMuzio collected a match-high 11 kills (11-7-29, .138). Ashley Klein dished 18 assists and two aces while Rachel Hausler finished with 13 digs. Arnelle Akakpo provided seven kills.

The opening set was a toss-up, with nine ties and six lead changes. Trailing 23-19, NJCU ran off the next five points to gain a 24-23 advantage, with junior outside hitter MARISSA SCARPA (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) landing two kills.  But a kill and ace by Wesley's Tatum Jones put the opposition ahead, 25-24, and a bad set by the Knights clinched the Wolverine win.

NJCU had a dozen kills in each of the first two sets and a 24-17 advantage in those periods but Wesley gained a 2-0 lead after the second set. WC had a commanding lead early before NJCU rallied to tie it at 15-15 and 16-16, with one lead in between. But Wesley regained the advantage, pushing the lead to 24-20 before holding on to win by three, 25-22. In the third set, Wesley held a 12-5 differential in kills and opened up a 17-11 cushion before cruising, 25-18.

NJCU will look for its first win of the season on Tuesday, September 3 when it opens its 17-match home schedule against John Jay College at 7 p.m. at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
