of the season.
NJCU evened its record at 3-3, outshooting Baruch (1-4), 33-8, on a hot and humid afternoon in which the mercury reached the low 90s. The Knights had a 17-2 edge in shots in the second period after a 16-6 edge at halftime when NJCU led, 3-0. The Knights also had an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Freshman
DAVAUNI BROWN (Newark, NJ/Newark Tech) netted his first career goal to cap the scoring. Junior center mid
KELVIN FLORES (Hightstown, NJ/Hightstown), junior midfielder
MANNY MARTIS (Union, NJ/Union) and freshman midfielder
JUSTIN APONTE (Harrison, NJ/Harrison) each contributed single assists. Junior goalkeeper
RUBEN MORALES (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) did not make a save in a relatively quiet effort in net.
Baruch's lone goal was scored by
Armando Aguilar, his first of the season off an assist from
Victor Tlepshev. Baruch utilized three goalkeepers;
Helder Correia allowed three first-half goals while making four saves.
Guy Sharav gave up three goals against one save in 35:24 before
Xavier Carrillo played the final 9:36 in net, stopping one shot.
With a little luck,
Conteh could have scored NJCU's first three goals of the game. Early in the ninth minute,
Conteh made a nifty move to dribble past several Bearcats, shedding defenders on his way to the net before clanking a shot from the left middle of the box off the outside far right post.
Caban was there to pounce on the rebound, immediately knocking it home at 9:06.
Just 1:47 later,
Conteh claimed his second goal of the season. After a corner kick by
Flores was cleared out of the box, a scramble ensued inside the penalty arc on top of the 18.
Conteh got to the ball, using his 6-foot-3 frame to win possession before he hit a top-shelf side-legged shot down the middle of the target at 10:53.
At 23:18,
Caban and
Conteh teamed up again on a rebounded goal.
Conteh, who picked up his third assist of the year, unleashed a shot from the left side of the box. The rebound came to the right post and was immediately knocked home by
Caban who again was in the right place at the right time.
NJCU nearly got on the board two more times in the opening period, with sophomore midfielder/forward
TYLER KRYCHKOWSKI (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) narrowly missing solid opportunities in the 32
nd and 36
th minutes.
Just 2:05 out of the half, Baruch made it a 3-1 game as
Tlepshev took a free kick from the far right side into the box, which
Aguilar redirected inside the right post at 47:05.
But
Lopes would strike twice in the 60
th and 62
nd minutes to put the game out of reach. At 59:04,
Aponte dribbled on the far wing, slipped a pass to
Flores who dished to
Lopes on the right side of the box. After a few dribbles, he ripped a shot from 15 yards inside the far left post.
Flores earned his second assist of the season while
Aponte picked up his first as a collegian.
Just 2:19 later,
Martis, who chalked up his third assist, slipped a thru ball up the middle onto the feet of
Lopes, who dribbled into the box and beat a diving goalkeeper to his left at the 61:23 threshold.
NJCU capped the scoring at 77:20.
Krychkowski slipped a nice pass up the right sideline to
Brown. The Baruch defense initially broke up the play before
Brown regained possession, beat a defender, completely faked out and eluded the opposing keeper, before slipping an uncontested shot on the right post into the nylon.
In all, NJCU used 24 players in the game. The defensive unit, led by rookies
SANTIAGO LOPEZ-CORREA (North Bergen, NJ/Belleville) and
GABRIEL FREITAS (Kearny, NJ/Kearny), who played 84 and 83 minutes respectively in the heat, allowed just one Baruch shot on goal all afternoon.
NJCU will host its annual Alumni Game on Saturday, September 14 at 11 a.m. before returning to regular-season action on Saturday, September 21 at William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ at 1 p.m. for the 2013 New Jersey Athletic Conference opener.
