CEDAR CREST SWEEPS NJCU IN TRI-MATCH OPENER

- NJCU committed too many errors to keep pace with Cedar Crest.

NJCU (1-5), facing Cedar Crest (2-3) for the first time in its volleyball history, was basically even with the Falcons in kills, with CC owning a 25-24 advantage. But Cedar Crest only committed 14 attack error and made just seven service errors in 73 attempts for a .904 team percentage.
 
In the second match of the tri, Cedar Crest evened its record at 3-3, sweeping the College of Staten Island, 25-6, 25-13, 25-23.
 
In defeat for NJCU, junior middle hitter JADE MEDLEY (Queens, NJ/Hudson Catholic) was NJCU's leading offensive player with nine kills (9-6-25, .120) and two blocks (one solo). Junior setter MADELYN LEON (West New York, NJ/Memorial), in her first action since suffering an injury on August 31, dished 16 assists while landing two aces.
 
Also for NJCU, senior libero CINDY GARCIA (West New York, NJ/Memorial) defended 13 digs. Junior outside hitter MARISSA SCARPA (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) contributed 11 digs and two aces.
 
The Falcons major offensive weapon was middle blocker Rebecca Grady, who hit .409 with 10 kills versus one error (.409), while adding four aces. Jessica Lobien and Amber Wehry each floored four aces. Setter Celina Danish dished 19 assists and Ericka Clayton added 11 digs.
 
NJCU led early in all three sets and landed eight kills in each period. In the first set, NJCU trailed 12-9 before CC ran off seven consecutive points to gain a 19-9 margin and eventually built a 21-10 lead via a 9-1 run. CC won the opening set despite a team hitting percentage of .000.
 
In game two, the Knights led 11-6 before the Falcons stormed back, uncorking an 8-0 run behind the serving of Wehry, which included three aces, and the visitors cruised to a 2-0 lead in the match. In set three, the clubs were tied at 14-14 and 15-15 midway through the period. But six straight points behind the serving of Grady, capped by four straight NJCU errors, allowed Cedar Crest to build a 21-15 advantage, en route to a 3-0 win.
