Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CAPE CORAL, FL (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University broke up a Franklin & Marshall College bid for a no-hitter with one out in the seventh inning and Nazareth College powered past the Gothic Knights based on one big inning as NJCU lost its final two games of the Gene Cusic Classic at the Cape Coral Sports Complex on March 13, falling to F&M, 4-0 and Nazareth, 10-1, in five innings. NJCU ends the trip at 1-7.

***Franklin & Marshall 4, NJCU 0***
F&M (6-3) junior right-hander Justine Lohrey was brilliant, striking out seven against just one walk in a 7.0 inning one-hit performance. She improved to 3-0 on the year.

The only hit came off the bat of senior captain and catcher MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford), the 97th of her career, with a one-out single to center in the seventh.

NJCU junior left-hander ASHLEY LATUSHKO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) allowed just one earned run and four hits (three singles) in defeat (1-4). She struck out one and walked seven.

No Diplomats had multiple hits. First baseman Caroline Abin scored twice and designated player Kaitlin Zampino walked twice.

F&M got the only run it needed in the bottom of the second on a one-out double to center by right fielder Patricia Crigler that knocked in Abin who reached on a fielder's choice that erased a walk.

F&M tacked on three additional runs in the fourth without the benefit of a hit. Zampino walked, advanced two bases on wild pitches and scored on the first of two errors in the inning before another error allowed two more runners to come home.
***Nazareth 10, NJCU 1 (5 innings)***
NJCU led 1-0 before the Golden Flyers (4-4) scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning—six of them unearned—and 12 Nazareth batters came to the plate in the frame. Naz added two runs in the third and one in the fourth before the game ended after four and a half innings due to the eight-run rule.

In defeat, All-NJAC senior center fielder CASEY PEREZ (West New York, NJ/Academy of the Holy Angels) had two of NJCU's three hits, batting 2-for-3 with a steal.

For Naz, catcher Sophia Rhoades was 2-for-2 with three RBIs—both hits coming in the second inning. Left fielder Morgan Ross was 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBIs and a walk and second baseman Kailey Ritch was 3-for-4 with two runs. Third baseman Carly Pike knocked in three runs, batting 1-for-2 with a double and run scored. Right fielder Cydney Luke scored twice for the Flyers, members of the Empire 8 Conference.

Nicole Bayona earned the win, allowing one unearned run and three hits (all singles) with three strikeouts and three walks. Freshman righty MELISSA MENDOZA (Union, NJ/Union City) took the loss (0-3) despite allowing just one earned run (seven total) against 10 hits in 2.0 innings. Latushko threw the final two innings, allowing three runs and two hits (four walks).

NJCU struck first in the top of the second as sophomore right fielder THALIA GARCIA (Ridgefield, NJ/North Bergen) reached on a throwing error, stole second, and scored on a pair of wild pitches.

Rhoades led off the second with a single for Naz and a pinch runner scored on an RBI single to left by Ross that tied the game. But a two-out throwing error extended the inning and the Flyers capitalized. The go-ahead run came in on the error before an RBI single by first baseman Maureen Rogers, a two-run double by Pike and a two-RBI double to left by Rhoades, her second hit of the inning, made it a 7-1 contest. Pike and Rhoades each walked with the bases loaded in the third to push across a pair of runs before Ross' sacrifice fly in the fourth capped the scoring.

NJCU is back on the field on Tuesday, March 18 at 3 p.m. in the first of four straight non-conference road doubleheaders when it faces John Jay College on Randall's Island in New York City.
