Box Score STATEN ISLAND, NY (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | No. 8 seeded New Jersey City University led by two in the final minute before top-seeded College of Staten Island hit a go-ahead three and iced the game from the line after a missed Gothic Knight shot and late turnover as CSI survived NJCU, 79-74, in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Quarterfinals on March 5 at the CSI Sports & Recreation Center. The loss ends NJCU's 81st season of men's basketball at 14-13.

Staten Island (26-3), the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) regular season champions, improved to 14-0 at home this season and claimed its 18th straight home court victory overall but not before the Gothic Knights nearly became the first team to knock off the Dolphins in Staten Island this year. Only two other home wins for CSI were decided by a five-point margin or less.

NJCU, making its 20th appearance in the ECACs, 31st post-season appearance in 32 years and 38th all-time post-season tournament berth, lost to Staten Island for the first time in six post-season meetings.

Trailing by two with 1:49 to go, NJCU tied it on a layup by junior forward DREW MARLEY (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) and after CSI's top player, senior guard Bloochy Magloire missed a three, NJCU went in front for only the third time in the period when sophomore shooting guard KHALID MUHAMMAD (Orange, NJ/Orange) converted a layup with 39 seconds left to make it a 74-72 margin.

But with the game on the line and Staten Island shooting just 2-of-15 from three-point range, Magloire buried a three from the right corner with 26 seconds left. Senior small forward WALIK ALBRIGHT (Jersey City, NJ/Create Charter) missed inside with 14 seconds left and was forced to foul CSI. Dolphins' senior guard Jonathan Chadwick-Myers sank both free throws to push the margin to 77-74.

After a timeout, NJCU had a chance to work for a game-tying shot but junior guard JUSTIN HARTE (Irvington, NJ/Irvington) threw a pass away with 2.1 seconds to play and Magloire iced the win with two foul shots.

In the final game of his two-time All-New Jersey Athletic Conference career, Albright reached the 20-point plateau for the seventh time in his career and sixth time this season, finishing with 20 points (8-16 FG) and six rebounds in 36 minutes. He had 14 in the first half. He closed his career with 1,160 points—18th in the 81-year history of the program.

Four scored in double figures for NJCU. Muhammad poured in 15 points (4-8 FG), highlighted by 7-of-8 foul shooting and seven rebounds. Junior guard JAMALL MCDANIEL (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) chipped in 12 points (5-8 FG), making 2-of-4 three-point tries and Marley scored a season-high 10 points (5-9 FG) off the bench. Junior point guard JOURDAN ROBERSON (Brooklyn, NY/University (Newark)) and Harte each collected four assists for NJCU.

CSI received a game-high 24 points from Chadwick-Myers, shooting 9-of-17 from the field (5-5 FT) with three assists and two steals in 33 minutes. He scored 14 in the second half, finishing with his second highest scoring total of the season.

The Dolphins needed every point by Chadwick-Myers because Magloire, who entered the game averaging 17.8 points per game, was just 1-of-10 from the field and 1-of-8 from three-point range (4-4 FT). He had scored just two points in 23 minutes before hitting the decisive three—his only field goal. Magloire finished with a season-low seven points—five in the final 26 seconds—marking the first time all year he has failed to reach double figures on the stat sheet (22 games). It snapped his personal 38-game double-digit scoring streak dating to January 10, 2013. The seven points was his lowest total since January 18, 2012 of his sophomore season.

Also for CSI, junior guard Javon Cox had a double-double of 14 points (4-6 FG, 6-9 FT) and 13 rebounds while junior center Will Fonseca netted 13 of his 15 points (5-9 FG, 5-8 FT) in the first half. Freshman guard Frankie Schettino collected seven points, seven boards, four assists and three steals.

CSI had more than twice as many free throw attempts as NJCU and capitalized, hitting 26-of-37 from the line (.703). NJCU was 11-of-17 from the stripe. Both teams oddly shot an identical 3-of-16 from three-point range (.188). NJCU made five more shots than the Dolphins, shooting 30-of-68 overall (.441) including 50 percent in the second half (16-32).

In a back-and-forth first half, NJCU led 13-9 before Staten Island scored six straight to move in front and extended its lead to 20-15 at the tail end of an 11-2 run. NJCU battled back to force the fourth tie of the half (21-21) before CSI used a 10-2 spurt to gain its largest lead of the night, 31-23, with 5:49 to play in the period. Still up by seven, NJCU scored the next six points—four by Albright—to make it a two-point game before CSI took a three-point cushion (35-32) into the break.

Out of the intermission, CSI scored a pair of quick baskets to work the lead back to seven (39-32) before the Knights quickly recovered to make it a one-point game (39-38). The see-saw swung back to the home team, which chalked up the next seven points—four by Chadwick-Myers—to match its largest lead at eight points (46-38) with 14:52 to go. Yet again, NJCU clawed back and made it a one-possession game before tying it at 52-52 (9:39 left) on a layup by Harte.

Magloire's first points of the contest came from the line with 8:28 remaining to help the Dolphins splash back in front by five (57-52) and a three-point play from Cox with 7:47 left extended the advantage to seven (60-53). But trailing 62-55, McDaniel answered, knocking down a pair of triples at 6:48 and 6:16 and a layup by Marley with 5:46 to play gave NJCU its first lead (63-62) since midway through the first half. The clubs traded four ties in the next three minutes, including 68-68 with 2:38 to play on an offensive rebound and putback of his own miss by McDaniel, before two more ties—70-70 and 72-72—ensued, leading up to the final dramatic minute.
