| Senior catcher MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) belted her 19th career homerun in game two, but Kean University held off the Gothic Knights, 4-2, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on April 1. In game one, Kean's Courtney Yard threw the first recorded perfect game in that school's history as the Cougars prevailed, 9-0, in five innings.

Kean (15-3, 2-0 NJAC), which received nine votes in the March 26 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III national poll—equivalent to a No. 27 national ranking, was opening its NJAC schedule. NJCU (2-18, 0-4 NJAC) saw its losing streak reach 11. Bariso moved into 10th place in school history with 110 career hits in the nightcap.

Kean's pitching was perfect for the first eight innings of the doubleheader, retiring 24 consecutive batters before a single to lead off the fourth inning in game two.

*** GAME 1: Kean 9, NJCU 0 (5 innings) ***
In the opener, Yard retired all 15 batters she faced in 5.0 innings, striking out seven over 58 pitches (44 strikes) to improve to 7-2. The game ended after five innings due to the eight-run rule, as the Cougars scored four runs in the second and third innings and a ninth run in the fourth frame.

Offensively for the Cougars, designated player Alexis D'Aloisio went 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI while left fielder Emily Bissonnette and catcher Jill Martin each finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs and one run. Second baseman Emily Sabo was 2-for-3 with an RBI in game one

Kean left fielder Sandra Binkiewicz had three RBIs, batting 2-for-3. Moorehead drew three walks and Yard walked twice, driving in one run. Center fielder Megan Cegielski, the leadoff hitter, scored three times.

Yard (8-2) started for Kean, pitched the first three innings then returned in relief in the top of the sixth immediately after Bariso's solo homerun drew NJCU within two runs. In 5.0 total innings, she struck out six, walked none, and allowed one hit. In 10.0 total innings over two games, she struck out 13 batters, allowed one hit and faced just one over the minimum.

Rebecca Rotola allowed two runs and five hits in 2.0 innings for Kean, walking one. Junior right-hander TAYLOR SETAR (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) allowed just two earned runs and five hits in defeat (0-6), walking seven.

Kean scored twice in the first inning when Binkiewicz capitalized on a preceding error with an RBI double down the left field line before a sac fly by Yard. In the second, Binkiewicz' two-out RBI single made it 3-0.

NJCU finally got its first hit of the day in the fourth when senior center fielder CASEY PEREZ (West New York, NJ/Academy of the Holy Angels), the first batter to face Rotola, singled to the pitcher, stole second, moved to third on another single and scored on NJCU's third hit of the inning—an RBI single up the middle by Bariso.

Binkiewicz pushed the lead to 4-1 in the fourth, knocking in an unearned run with a sac fly. Bariso's solo homer in the sixth was NJCU's final offense of the day before Yard re-entered to shut down the Knights. She struck out three swinging in the seventh inning, giving up a lone one-out single.

NJCU next faces Baruch College in non-conference doubleheader action on Thursday, April 3 at 3:30 p.m. in New York, NY.
