New Jersey City University jumped out to a 4-1 lead and had a 5-3 advantage through five innings, but Richard Stockton College rallied for single runs in the sixth and seventh to tie it and scored two go-ahead runs in the eighth as the Ospreys overcame NJCU, 7-5, in the second game of a two-day New Jersey Athletic Conference home-and-home series on April 11.
Both games in the series were won by the home team and each was decided by a two-run margin with the winning runs being manufactured in the bottom of the eighth. NJCU has its two-game win streak end, as the Gothic Knights fell to 9-13 (3-5 NJAC). Stockton is 14-10 and evened its NJAC mark at 4-4. The Ospreys had a 12-7 cushion in hits in the game but did not have an extra base hit in the series.
NJCU did most of its offensive damage in the top of the second inning when it scored four times—highlighted by a two-run single by junior shortstop
(Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) started, allowing four earned runs and nine hits with a strikeout and three walks in a no-decision effort. Junior righty
KEVIN DEMAURO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) took the loss in an inning of relief (2-4), allowing two runs and three hits with a pair of walks. Freshman
MARK PETRUCELLI (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Queen of Peace) retired the only batter he faced in relief.
Stockton sophomore righty
Ryan Adamski threw the first 5.0 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) and six hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Senior righty
Brandon Trainor won in relief (2-3), limiting NJCU to one hit in the final four innings while striking out a pair of batters.
After Stockton notched an initial run in the bottom of the first on a bases loaded groundout by
Solomen after two singles and a walk, NJCU answered with four runs in the top of the second, aided by two errors. A walk, throwing error on a fielder's choice and a hit by pitch loaded the bases before a groundout by Wagner tied the game and
D'Errico's two-run single to center put NJCU ahead, 3-1. Later, junior third baseman
MICHAEL MARTUCCI (Bayonne, NJ/Saint Peter's Prep) reached with his 124
th career hit and stole second, and when the throw was wide,
D'Errico trotted home from third with the fourth run.
Stockton began chipping away at the lead, scoring twice in the fourth on RBI singles by freshman shortstop
Bryce DiPaola and
Bush. NJCU added a run in the fifth for a 5-3 lead as freshman second baseman
TAYLOR BORN (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) singled with one out,
Niech doubled and
Giordano grounded out to short to drive in Born.
But NJCU's bats were silent the rest of the game and the Ospreys slowly rallied. In the sixth,
Marra singled, advanced on a throwing error and scored an unearned run on a two-out single by
Bush. Stockton tied it at 5-5 in the seventh as
Solomen walked with two outs and scored on back-to-back singles by
Oliver and
Marra, the latter producing an RBI.
In the eighth,
DeMauro, on in relief, got a pair of quick ground outs before walking sophomore left fielder
Keith Tapper and
Mangarella in consecutive at bats. A single through the right side by
Eisenhart provided the go-ahead run, scoring
Tappert, and
Solomen followed with a single to right to knock in
Mangarella for the 7-5 margin. NJCU had a leadoff single in the ninth before the next three batters were retired to end the game.
NJCU will face #6/7 ranked Kean University on Saturday, April 12 at 11:30 a.m. in an NJAC doubleheader in Union, NJ.
