TCNJ Sweeps NJCU in NJAC Softball

- Marissa Bariso drove in three runs in the seventh inning of game two. She is fifth in school history with 34 doubles.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 EWING, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Senior catcher MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) notched her 33rd and 34th career doubles including a three-run two-base hit in the seventh inning in game two but The College of New Jersey swept New Jersey City University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on April 18, 13-1 in five innings, and 6-4 in game two.
 
TCNJ won its first two league games of the season, improving to 8-22 (2-12 NJAC) while giving head coach Sally Miller her 500th career win in game one when the Lions snapped a 13-game losing streak. NJCU is now 5-27 (1-13 NJAC).
 
TCNJ center fielder Lindsey Williams, the No. 9 hitter, was a combined 5-for-6 with six RBIs, three runs and two home runs—her first two career round-trippers—and two doubles.

In the opener, TCNJ tallied season highs for runs (13) and hits (14), scoring in each of the first four innings. The Lions scored twice in the first inning, three more in the second with two runs in the third inning for a 7-1 advantage before a six spot in the fourth enforced the eight-run rule.
 
NJCU's lone run came in the second inning when freshman KAYLA MUNIZ (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by freshman left fielder YAQUELIN IGLESIAS (White Plains, NY/White Plains). The Gothic Knights had four hits.
 
Junior left-hander ASHLEY LATUSHKO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) took the loss (4-13). She struck out one, walked two and nine of the 13 runs were earned.
 
TCNJ was led by Williams who went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, two runs, a double and a two-run homer in the second inning. Catcher Jamie Purcell was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and first baseman Deanna Utter finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs. Second baseman Colleen Phelan was 2-for-3 with a run, RBI and walk. Left fielder Christine Desiderio and right fielder Kristen Fitzsimmons each scored twice.
 
Senior Alex Carisone (2-8) won, striking out six while walking one in 5.0 innings, allowing one run and four hits.

Bariso was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two doubles and her three-run bases-loaded double in the seventh inning made it a two-run contest before sophomore Katie Hourihan entered in

The Lions had 10 hits, scoring four runs in the second before single runs in the third and sixth frames proved to be the winning runs.
 
Williams batted 2-for-3 with two RBIs, one run and a double. Her double in the second inning made it 2-0 before her sixth-inning solo homer increased the margin to 6-0. Desiderio and Utter each had two hits, with a run, RBI and walk.
 
Iglesias batted 2-for-3 with a run scored. Senior All-NJAC center fielder CASEY PEREZ (West New York, NJ/Academy of the Holy Angels) had a bases-loaded RBI walk for NJCU's first run in the seventh inning. She had her 73rd career stolen base and 93rd hit in the loss.
 
Sophomore Ashtin Helmer (4-10) won for TCNJ, allowing four runs and seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 6.1 innings. Junior right-handed pitcher TAYLOR SETAR (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) took the loss (1-11), allowing just four earned runs but walking seven.
 
NJCU begins a six-game homestand on Tuesday, April 22 when it hosts Ramapo College in NJAC action at 3 p.m. at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.
