JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com)
| Ramapo College scored four times in the top of the seventh to break open a one-run game and held off a comeback bid by New Jersey City University to take game one of a New Jersey Athletic Conference softball doubleheader, 6-3, at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex on April 22. With rain beginning to fall, game two was postponed and will be played on Thursday, April 24 at 4 p.m.

NJCU, now 5-28 (1-14 NJAC), was facing Ramapo (15-15, 7-8 NJAC) and former head coach Bridgette Quimpo for the first time since she became the Roadrunners' head coach in October after 10 seasons (2004-13, 135 wins) as the Gothic Knights' all-time winningest head coach.

In defeat, senior All-NJAC center fielder CASEY PEREZ (West New York, NJ/Academy of the Holy Angels) stole three bases—the 74th, 75th and 76th of her career—and was 1-for-3 with a walk and RBI. She now has 94 career hits.

Senior catcher MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) notched her 35th career double and batted 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored while upping her career hits mark to 126.

Freshman third baseman KAYLA MUNIZ (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) finished 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI. Senior shortstop GABRIELLE RIVERA (Teaneck, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) and freshman designated player JAZZ RANDALL (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) were each 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Junior left-hander ASHLEY LATUSHKO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) took the loss (4-14) despite allowing just three hits through the first four innings. She gave up four earned runs and nine hits in 7.0 innings with a pair of walks over 97 pitches.

Sophomore first baseman Melanie Walling (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) had the biggest hit of the day—a three-run homer to break open a 2-1 game in the seventh—and finished with four RBIs and one run in a 1-for-4 effort. The homer proved key as NJCU scored twice in the bottom of the seventh.

Junior second baseman Kim LaPenta (Rockaway, NJ/Butler) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk while sophomore right fielder Danielle Saporito (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.

Senior lefty Nicole Schneider (Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) claimed the win (8-5), allowing three runs and seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks over 107 pitches in her seven innings on the mound.

Ramapo struck first in the opening inning as LaPenta doubled to the left-center fence and scored on a single to center by Saporito after NJCU narrowly missed turning two to get out of the inning.

In the third, Perez reached on a two-out error and stole the 75th base of her career before Bariso hit a long fly ball that was caught in front of the fence. In the fourth, Ramapo had a runner at first base after a one-out single and a sacrifice before sophomore catcher Melissa Moreno (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) sharply lined a ball to deep center. Perez made a great play retreating and reaching up for the inning-ending grab.  In the bottom of the fourth Muniz walked and moved to second on a sacrifice before a line out to the pitcher to end the threat.

Ramapo expanded the one-run lead in the fifth. A single and a fielding error on a misplayed sacrifice, followed by a walk loaded the bases. Walling blooped a ball over shortstop to score freshman Taylor May (Ringwood, NJ/Bergen County Tech) from third for a 2-0 lead on a play that resulted in a force at third and a fielder's choice.

In the sixth, Bariso originally flew out but got another chance when an illegal pitch was called. She took advantage, driving her 35th career double over the head of the leaping left fielder and off the tip of the glove before scoring when Muniz tripled down the right field line and the outfielder stumbled. With the tying run at third, two groundouts to the left side got RCNJ out of the inning.

But Ramapo got insurance in the seventh. LaPenta chopped a single over third and her time on base was extended when a perfect throw to second on a stolen base try was dropped. After another single put runners on the corners, Walling lined a three-run homer over the right-center fence to make it a 5-1 game and put the contest out of reach. A sac fly drove in the sixth run.

Back-to-back singles to center by Rivera and Randall opened the bottom of the seventh. Perez drove in one run with a groundout and Bariso ripped an RBI single to cut the deficit in half, 6-3, but NJCU couldn't further chip away.
