NJCU, playing its first extra-inning game of the season, scored once in the first and twice in the third for a 3-0 margin. In the first, Perez reached on an error, stole second and third and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman YAQUELIN IGLESIAS (White Plains, NY/White Plains), who was making her second career start at shortstop and walked twice with one RBI. NJCU stranded runners on second and third in a two-error inning.

In the third, Perez led off with a bunt single—the 95th of her career—but was called out for leaving early at first on a steal attempt. That cost NJCU a run and ultimately was a major moment in the game. Iglesias walked and Bariso and senior second baseman MAXINE KAMINSKI (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) followed with back-to-back singles to left field to load the bases. Freshman third baseman KAYLA MUNIZ (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) had a 3-0 count before grounding to short and RCNJ got the force at the plate. Junior left fielder TAYLOR SETAR (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) walked on four pitches to push across a run before Kaminski scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 advantage. NJCU stranded two runners in scoring position.

Sophomore first baseman Melanie Walling (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) led off the fourth with a single to center that was misplayed into an error and moved to third on a groundout. A grounder to third was bobbled and a second error on the same play allowed Walling to score from third. A single to center put runners on the corners and a bunt single loaded the bases. A force at the plate on a grounder to third got the second out before a first pitch liner to left ended the threat with the bases full.

In the bottom of the fourth Perez and Iglesias walked with two outs, with Perez stealing her 79th base and sixth of the doubleheader before Bariso singled through the left side to load the bases. Ramapo junior left fielder Jaclyn Lima (Linden, NJ/Linden) made a running catch in foul territory to snag a foul ball by Kaminski to end the inning. NJCU stranded seven runners through four innings.

In the fifth, Melendez singled to the left-center gap and was held to one base on a good play by Perez before Walling beat out an infield single and a walk loaded the bases. Freshman shortstop Nicole Hernandez (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) made it a one-run game when she dropped down a bunt and reached on an RBI single to the mound. On the second play, Ramapo nearly scored on an errant throw on a double play attempt before sophomore first baseman FAITH ELY (Vienna, NJ/Hackettstown) recovered and her relay to the plate was just in time to tag out the runner to keep the game tied.

In the sixth, Boffalo led off with a single and advanced to third on the second hit of the inning. When the runner rounded first too far, Ely, the cutoff man, threw to first. But her throw bounced away and rolled far enough for Boffalo to score the tying run. Perez had a two-out single in the sixth—the 96th of her career—and stole second—her fourth steal of the game—before a pop out ended the threat.

In the seventh, a runner reached on a single on a high hop to third with one out and advanced on a sacrifice. Kaminski made a back-pedaling catch in shallow right to end the frame. In the bottom of the inning, Muniz had a two-out double that rolled to the left-center wall before a grounder to third sent the game to extra innings.

In the eighth, each team had a runner begin on second base. Two quick outs—a pop out and a liner to left— put NJCU in position to get out of the inning. LaPenta chopped a grounder to short but Iglesias booted the ball and sophomore catcher Melissa Moreno (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) scored what proved to be the decisive run before a two-run double by Melendez upped the RCNJ lead to 6-3. NJCU went in order in the bottom of the eighth.

NJCU will conclude its 2014 NJAC and home schedule on Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m. when it hosts Richard Stockton on Senior Day in Jersey City. NJCU will honor Bariso, Kaminski, Perez and shortstop GABRIELLE RIVERA (Teaneck, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades).
