Bariso Goes Out Swinging as NJCU Softball Season Ends with Losses at Staten Island

- While Marissa Bariso didn't break the all-time home run record this year, she did cap her senior campaign with an impressive 5-for-6 onslaught to finish in comfortable position in school history in RBIs, doubles and total hits.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 STATEN ISLAND, NY (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Senior catcher and captain MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) wrapped up her brilliant New Jersey City University softball career in style, finishing a combined 5-for-6 with three doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored but NJCU dropped a non-conference doubleheader at the College of Staten Island, 12-3 (six innings) and 13-5 (five innings) on April 28 at the CSI Softball Complex.

Bariso moved into third place in program history in RBIs (96), fourth in career doubles (38) and eighth in career hits (135) as a result of her final onslaught.

Senior center fielder CASEY PEREZ (West New York, NJ/Academy of the Holy Angels) did not have a hit in either game and her quest to join the 100-hit club ends in disappointment with 98 career hits—71 in the last two years alone—but she did steal her 37th base of the season in 38 tries and upped her career steals mark to 82-for-85—a .965 steal percentage which ranks 11th best in NCAA Division III history.

With the two losses, NJCU's season ends with a mark of 5-33, losing its final 11 contests. Staten Island, the CUNYAC conference champions, is 20-15.

*** GAME 1: Staten Island 12, NJCU 3 (6 innings) ***
In the opening game, Staten Island freshman right-hander Jacqueline Cautela limited NJCU to four hits and she helped her own cause by batting 3-for-4 with three runs, two steals and one RBI in the leadoff spot. On the mound, she improved to 13-6, allowing three runs and four hits with six strikeouts and three walks over 67 pitches.

Bariso had half of NJCU's hits, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and RBI while senior second baseman MAXINE KAMINSKI (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) walked twice and had one RBI. Junior lefty-hander ASHLEY LATUSHKO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) took the loss (4-17).

CSI, which scored twice in each of the first two innings added four runs in the fourth—highlighted by a solo homer by Cautela and a two-run shot by first baseman Stefanie Solari two batters later for a 7-0 lead which swelled to eight runs. Solari wad 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored and center fielder Brittany Smith contributed a 3-for-4 effort with two runs and one RBI.

Third baseman Christina Tufano and right fielder Chyanne Gilliam each were 2-for-4 with a run scored and Jennie Hosty had a walkoff two-run pinch-hit single in a four-run bottom of the sixth that enforced the eight-run rule.

NJCU's three runs came in the fifth inning and allowed NJCU to extend the game an inning, down 8-3. Bariso had an RBI single and Kaminski walked with the bases loaded before rookie third baseman KAYLA MUNIZ (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) added a sacrifice fly for the third Gothic Knight run.

In game two, NJCU held an early 2-0 lead before CSI scored eight times as 11 players batted in the bottom of the second. Leading 9-5, CSI put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Bariso put an exclamation mark on her career with a 3-for-3 showcase, doubling twice while registering two runs and two RBIs. Kaminski was 1-for-3 with a two-RBI double and freshman left fielder YAQUELIN IGLESIAS (White Plains, NY/White Plains) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

CSI starting pitcher Victoria Procopio was also the Dolphins' top hitter, going 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a run scored. Most notably, she had a three-run, bases-clearing double in the second before being thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple.  On the mound, the junior right-hander took a no-decision, allowing two runs and two hits in 2.0 innings, with one strikeout over 29 pitches.

Freshman righty Alexandra Conanan claimed her first collegiate victory (1-2), going the final 3.0 innings, allowing three runs and five hits with one strikeout over 40 pitches. Junior righty TAYLOR SETAR (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) took the loss (1-13).

Left fielder Danielle Locke supplied three RBIs on a three-run second inning homer and finished 1-for-2 with three ribbies and two runs scored. Gilliam went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored and Cautela, the designated player in the nightcap walked and scored twice. Smith walked twice and was 1-for-2 with three runs scored and Solar reached based four times—2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and one RBI. In all, CSI players drew nine walks.

Tufano ended 1-for-2 with three RBIs, including a two-run single in between the extra-base hits by Locke and Procopio in the second inning. Shortstop Maxine Jasko was 2-for-4 with a run and a walkoff RBI single that ended the game in the fifth. Conanan walked twice.

NJCU did score twice in the first inning. Bariso doubled to knock in Perez, who was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored her 59th career run. Bariso scored on a sac fly by Muniz.

Bariso was right in the middle of the offense again in the third when she doubled to bring in Iglesias and came around on a fielder's choice by Kaminski. A fifth-inning RBI double by Kaminski knocked in Iglesias and cut the deficit to 9-5.
