MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) was a combined 6-for-6 with two RBIs, two runs, her 31
st career double and 20
th home run but
New Jersey City University was swept by William Paterson University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on April 9. The Pioneers won the opener in six innings, 10-2, before prevailing 9-1 in five frames in the nightcap.
William Paterson won for the 12
th time in 15 games and improved to 17-5 overall (7-1 NJAC) while sending NJCU to its fourth straight defeat (4-22, 0-8 NJAC).
Bariso was 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored in each game of the doubleheader while becoming just the second Gothic Knight to ever reach the 20-homer plateau. She is three shy of equaling the program's career record of 23 by
Jen Barletta (1998-2001). Additionally, she moved into ninth place in school history with 119 career hits.
Meanwhile, senior All-NJAC center fielder
CASEY PEREZ (West New York, NJ/Academy of the Holy Angels) had a steal in each game—her 24
th straight to open the season—before being thrown out at third base in the top of the third inning in game two by WP junior catcher
Lachelle Rouse. It was her first caught stealing since her sophomore season in 2012, snapping a school-record streak of 51 consecutive stolen bases. She is now 69-for-72 in stolen base attempts in her career.
Perez, who was 27-for-27 in steals as a junior, was last caught on April 10, 2012—also in a game at William Paterson and also on a throw by
Rouse.
*** GAME 1: William Paterson 10, NJCU 2 (6 innings) ***
In game one, NJCU scored twice in the first inning before the Pioneers chalked up 10 unanswered runs. The hosts tied it in the bottom of the first, then scored two more times in the second and third before a three-run fourth put the game away. A bases-loaded single in the bottom of the sixth enforced the eight-run rule. NJCU was limited to four hits in the game—three by
Bariso.
For WP, catcher
Kim Fryer was 3-for-3 with four RBIs, a walk and run scored. She hit a two-run homerun in the third inning for a 6-2 lead before adding RBI singles in the fourth and sixth to account for the final two runs. Shortstop
Katelyn Miele batted 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Her two-run homer in the bottom of the first tied the game before adding an RBI single in the second inning for a 4-2 margin.
Also for the Pioneers, third/second baseman
Rachel Wasilak finished 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs as the Pioneers collected 14 hits in the win. She drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the fourth inning, expanding the lead to 8-2.
NJCU had initially gained the lead in the first inning when

Bariso. Later, a two-out single by freshman designated player
KAYLA MUNIZ (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) drove in
Bariso for a brief 2-0 advantage.
Sophomore right-hander
Chelsea Batelli won (3-1), allowing two unearned runs and four hits in six innings while striking out seven without issuing a walk over 68 pitches. Junior left-hander
ASHLEY LATUSHKO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) took the loss (3-11) for NJCU.

In game two, the Pioneers scored twice in the first, three times in the second and four more in the third to claim a 9-1 lead which stood up for the eight-run rule to come into play in the fifth.
Bariso, whose only other homer this year came against Kean University on April 1, belted her 20
th round-tripper on a 2-0 pitch over the left-center field fence in the third inning. She was responsible for three of NJCU's six hits.
Nine different players had a hit for the Pioneers, including eight starters, in a game in which WP's 10 total hits were well spread out.
Wasilak was the lone player with multiple hits, batting 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored to finish the day 6-for-6 with four runs and four RBIs.
Kim Fryer was 1-for-2 with two RBIs while
Nicole Fryer scored three runs and walked twice.
Junior righty
Kerrin Dys won (3-0), pitching the first three innings. She allowed one run and five hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Freshman left-hander
Meghin Stanton threw the final 2.0 innings, allowing one hit with three strikeouts and two walks. Junior righty
TAYLOR SETAR (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) took the loss for NJCU (1-8).
A first inning RBI single by
Kim Fryer and a groundout by
Gabrielle Castelli gave WP all the offense it would need, leading, 2-0. The Pioneers added two in the second on a bases-loaded walk to
Miele and a wild pitch before a
Kim Fryer sacrifice fly made it 5-0.
Wasilak's two run single in the third extended the lead to 7-1 before a shortstop throwing error allowed the eighth and ninth runs to plate.
NJCU next faces rival Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m. in a home NJAC doubleheader at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.
