Ramapo Offense Too Strong in Sweep of #NJCUWVB

JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Ramapo College freshman outside hitter Larysa Iwaskiw (Westwood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) has won four consecutive New Jersey Athletic Conference Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week awards to open the 2014 season and on September 23, she demonstrated why. Iwaskiw put away 15 kills and hit .324 as Ramapo had a 34-17 advantage in winners and swept the New Jersey City University women's volleyball team, 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-14) in NJAC action at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on 'Coach Charlie Brown Court.'
 
Ramapo wins its third straight and improves to 12-4 (1-0 NJAC) while playing its first conference match of the season. NJCU is 0-10 for the first time in 26 years.

Iwaskiw had nearly as many kills as NJCU did. She put away 15 of 34 attacks and made just four errors in her .324 evening and the 6-foot-0 hitter added a double-double with 12 digs and three aces.
 
Meanwhile, the Gothic Knights hit -.037 in the match (17-20-81). Senior middle hitter Jade Medley (Queens, NJ/Hudson Catholic) was the lone Knight with notable offensive numbers, landing five kills (5-3-14, .143) while adding nine digs.
 
Freshman setter Rachel McIntyre (Drexel Hills, PA/Upper Darby) delivered 14 assists and senior right side Ashley Latushko (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) finished with 12 digs and two aces.
 
Also for Ramapo, which has five players of at least 6-foot-0 on its roster, freshman outside Amanda Rose (Manorville, NY) hit .500 with six kills (6-1-10) and sophomore middle blocker Emily Guzman (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) added eight kills and two blocks at a .286 percentage (8-4-14). No other player had more than two kills for RCNJ, although junior middle blocker Katelyn Ward (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) stuffed six blocks including two solo. Ramapo had a combined 11 aces and eight blocks as a team.
 
Junior setter Kaitlin Mac Iver (Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) contributed 19 assists, six digs and four aces. Junior setter Nicole Hermann (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) tallied 11 assists.
 
NJCU did challenge Ramapo in the opening set, when despite an 11-5 differential in kills, the Knights scored the first six points. After getting caught and falling behind, 13-10, NJCU reeled off a 7-1 run to gain a 17-14 lead. But Ramapo took over from there, scoring 11 of the final 12 points. After back-to-back aces by Mac Iver tied it at 17-17, Iwaskiw had five kills including four consecutive successful attacks to seal the first set, 25-18.
 
Iwaskiw accounted for eight of her 15 winners in the opening set, adding two in the second and five in the third. Ramapo had 12 kills in the second game when it hit .476 (12-2-21) and landed 11 more in the third set. Tied 6-6 in the second game, RCNJ scored nine of the next 11 points for a comfortable 15-8 lead and overall notched 19 of the final 24 points in a 25-11 outcome.
 
In the third set, NJCU stayed close midway. But trailing 12-11, Ramapo scored the next five points and 13 of the final 16 in a 25-14 result.
 
NJCU is back on the court in a home tri-match on Saturday, September 27 when it hosts Sarah Lawrence College at 11 a.m. and Medgar Evers at 3 p.m. with the two opponents playing a neutral court contest at 1 p.m.
