Fourth Straight Overtime to Open Season Ends in 1-0 Loss to Susquehanna

CAMDEN, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | For the fourth consecutive game to open the 2014 season, the New Jersey City University men's soccer team went into overtime, but for the first time, NJCU suffered a setback. With the sky getting dark and the field windy, Susquehanna University finished a header just 1:17 into the first overtime period to outlast the Gothic Knights, 1-0, in the opening game of the Cialella Soccer Classic, hosted by 2013 NCAA Division III national runner-up Rutgers University-Camden.

In the first meeting between the two schools in 10 years, Susquehanna (2-1-1), the reigning Landmark Conference champion, held a 14-4 advantage in shots and had the only shot of the overtime period. While NJCU (1-1-2) didn't have many scoring opportunities (one shot on goal), its defense did not yield many chances, giving up just four shots on goal.

NJCU's four overtimes already are tied for the fourth most in a season in the 56-year history of the program.

Susquehanna, a club which has played three overtime games already itself, got the golden goal winner at the 91:17 mark. After a bad clear off a throw-in, Jake Heyser (Westmont, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) crossed a ball over a defender on the defensive left side and David Trank (Mendham, NJ/West Morris Mendham) headed in the feed from about six yards to win it. It was Trank's first goal of the season; he finished with a game-high four shots.

The Crusaders had a 9-4 edge in corner kicks. SU held a 9-3 advantage in shots in the first half and a 4-1 differential in a quiet second half. Neither side had a shot in the final 20:46 of regulation.

Disney Soccer/NSCAA Division III National Player of the Week and converted junior goalkeeper Tyler Krychkowski (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) made three saves in his first loss; he still has not allowed an even-strength regulation goal in four starts.

Crusader keeper Augusto Lima made just one save in the shutout as NJCU was held without a goal for the second time this season. No Gothic Knight had more than two shots.

NJCU will face Drew University on day two of the tournament on September 7 at 2 p.m. The Rangers dropped a 2-1 decision to host and #12 Rutgers-Camden in Saturday's other contest. —www.njcugothicknights.com—
