New Jersey City University's offense stalled in the first two sets of its New Jersey Athletic Conference match with Rutgers University-Camden as the Scarlet Raptors swept NJCU, 3-0 (25-11, 25-8, 25-22) on October 15.
Camden moved above .500 overall and within the league (10-9, 3-2 NJAC). NJCU (9-12, 0-6 NJAC) dropped its fifth straight following a three-match winning streak.
NJCU could only produce three kills in the first two sets, hitting -.312 in game one (2-7-16) and -.321 in the second set (1-10-28) and that proved to be the difference in the contest. RUC didn't have an overwhelming attack, hitting just .153, but the Raptors owned a 28-14 margin in total kills.
Cortnee Wilkerson led the Raptors with eight kills, hitting .278 (8-3-18) and
Olivia Rowland finished with seven kills at a .294 pace (7-2-17) while adding two blocks.
Brooke Hassan dished 22 assists and added four kills while
Erin Thompson collected 12 digs for the hosts.
NJCU had 11 of its 14 kills in the match in game three when the Knights lost a tight set by three points. Rookie opposite hitter
Ayleen Pittar (Union City, NJ/Union City) led NJCU with five kills (.188, 5-2-16) and seven digs while freshman outside hitter
Georgina Rayo (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) equaled a match-high with 12 digs. Sophomore setter
Rachel McIntyre (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) finished with 10 assists and nine digs. Junior outside
Elyssa Magee (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) put down three blocks.
Of Note:- NJCU leads all-time series, 15-7. Rutgers-Camden has won the last seven meetings (2009-15).
- Georgina Rayo notched 10+ digs in a match for the fourth time.
What's Next?:NJCU will host its final non-conference tri-match of the season on Saturday, October 17 beginning at 11 a.m. at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (Coach Charlie Brown Court). The Knights host Maritime College in the first match before meeting Manhattanville College in the conclusive contest at 3 p.m. Maritime, members of the Skyline Conference and M-Ville, out of the MAC Freedom, will square off at 1 p.m. in a neutral contest.
NJCU and Manhattanville last met on September 22, 2013 in a neutral match in Bronxville, NY; the Valiants won, 3-1 (29-31, 25-22, 25-22, 25-16). M-Ville has the edge in the series, 5-4. NJCU and Maritime also met in a neutral site tournament that weekend (September 21, 2013) with the Knights prevailing, 3-0 (25-8, 25-9, 25-19). NJCU leads the all-time series, 2-0 (both sweeps).
