WAYNE, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University scored just 4:01 into the game before William Paterson University tied it 61 seconds later and went on to score seven goals on 15 total shots in a 7-2 New Jersey Athletic Conference men's soccer victory over NJCU under the lights on October 29 at Pioneer Soccer Park.
William Paterson (6-9-2, 2-6-1 NJAC) tied the game at the 5:02 mark and led 3-1 at the half on goals in the 37th and 40th minutes. WP scored four times in the second half with markers in the 47th, 60th, 78th and 81st frames. NJCU finished the season 1-16 (0-9 NJAC, lost 14).
Freshman midfielder
Theo Sanoh (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) scored his second goal of the season on the first shot of the game for either side for a 1-0 NJCU lead with a high shot over the Pioneer keeper.
Senior back
Christopher Segovia (North Bergen, NJ/Memorial), who wrapped up his career second in program history in both games started (76) and minutes played (6,084), notched his first goal of the season and third of his career in the 84th minute when he headed in a free kick from junior back
Davauni Brown (Newark, NJ/Newark Tech), who recorded his fifth assist.
Six different players scored for WP.
JP Gonzales netted the game-tying goal at the 5:02 mark and the clubs remained knotted at 1-1 for the next 31:02, until WP broke it open.
Scherdlens Jean Pierre scored what proved to be the winning goal on a double assist from
Mike Conte and
Dante Petrocelli in the 37th minute before
Josh Sommerer added the third goal of the half.
Sommerer was the lone WP player to score twice.
Conte scored the sixth goal and assisted on the second and fifth tallies for a four-point effort while
Aken Pierre and
Musa Sackoon each had a goal and an assist.
George Bardis also had an assist for the Pioneers who also had two unassisted tallies.
Freshman
Josuae Harvey-Steriti (Union City, NJ/Union City), who had played two previous games as a reserve, and entered the game with less than 16 minutes of action, made his first collegiate start and stopped three shots. Senior
Nico Martirano had three saves during the first 74:30 for WP, and freshman
Jordan Fernandes did not make a stop during the final 15:30 of action.
OF NOTE:
- 58th all-time meeting. William Paterson leads a series that began in 1959, 34-20-4. WP has won seven of the last eight meetings since 2008.
- The seven goals were the most scored by William Paterson in the series since a 10-0 loss in Wayne on November 4, 1997.
