Cordova Scores in Loss to Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Rookie back Odelia Cordova (Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) netted her first collegiate goal in the 71st minute to get the Gothic Knights on the board but based on two early and two late tallies and a 27-2 advantage in shots, Rutgers University-Newark took a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's soccer game from New Jersey City University, 5-1, in a game played in the rain at Alumni Field on October 3.

Rutgers-Newark improved to 10-3-0 overall and won its second straight NJAC game (2-2) in a game moved from NJCU's grass outdoor complex yesterday due to the forecast. NJCU (3-6-1, 0-3 NJAC) lost its third straight outing.

The Scarlet Raiders scored twice in a span of 2:28 in the opening 10 minutes as Cristina Estremera netted goals in the 7th and 9th minutes and with the Raiders leading 3-1, completed her hat trick with a score in the 86th minute for her eighth marker of the season. The Raiders added another marker 2:16 later midway through the 88th minute to cap it.

Nicole Gomez who assisted on the first goal, also added a tally in the 27th minute as the Raiders outshot NJCU 12-1 in the opening 45 minutes and led 3-0 at the half. Juliana Ceballos, who finished the day with four points, assisted on the third and fourth Raider goals before netting her fourth goal of the season at 87:32. Sara Corson also had an assist for the Raiders.

While the Knights were outshot in the second half, 15-1, and the Raiders held an 8-1 advantage in corners, NJCU was able to capitalize on its lone corner of the game as sophomore back Catarina Teodosio (Newark, NJ/East Side) unleashed a corner into the box at 70:58 where Cordova knocked it in; the assist was the first career helper for Teodosio.

Under heavy pressure, senior goalkeeper Cassie Lubonski (Edison, NJ/Edison) notched 14 saves. It was her fourth career effort of double figure saves. Diana Carvalho played the first 70:07 in net for the Raiders and made one save of a shot by Teodosio. Veronika Tueros allowed the goal in the final 19:53.

Estremera had a game-high seven shots (five on goal) for RUN while Ceballos attempted six shots with four on target.

OF NOTE:
  • Rutgers-Newark leads the all-time series, 14-2.
  • Cassie Lubonski's 14 saves were one shy of her career high of 15 at FDU-Florham on September 2, 2015.

WHAT'S NEXT?
NJCU will return home to the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field against John Jay College on Wednesday, October 7 at 3 p.m. NJCU leads the all-time series, 2-0, with an 11-0 goals differential.
