GALLOWAY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | For the sixth time this season, the
New Jersey City University men's soccer team held an opponent scoreless in the first half and for the sixth time, the Gothic Knights could not get a positive result. Stockton University scored five times on 12 shots in the second half and blanked NJCU, 5-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game under the lights on October 7.
Stockton, ranked 10th in the NCAA Division III South Atlantic Region—one of six NJAC teams ranked among the 10—improved to 10-3 overall (3-1 NJAC). NJCU (1-11, 0-5 NJAC, lost 9) was shutout for the fourth straight game and seventh time this season.
Of the six losses after being scoreless at the half, the Knights have been outscored 17-2 in the second half of those games. Of the losses, three came against nationally ranked opponents and twice in overtime.
Stockton outshot NJCU in the opening 45 minutes, 8-1. But in the second half, five different players scored for Stockton and five had an assist.
The Ospreys needed 3:19 to break through when leading scorer
Anthony Colofranson netted his 10th goal of the year, tapping in a crossing pass from
Bobby Spracklin.
Insurance came for the Ospreys in the form of two goals in a span of 1:12 in the 66th and 67th minutes.
Tim Sost, who was involved in both markers, tipped in a pass from
Jared Ruff for a 2-0 lead at 65:27 before feeding
Ian Carmelia at 66:39 for a 3-0 edge.
A breakaway in the 76th minute by
Steven Tobolski, assisted by
Joe Stapleton, made it 4-0, before
Myles Gortva netted a
Jeff Morgan pass in the 81st frame.
Freshman goalkeeper
John Riggs (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) made six saves for NJCU.
Bobby Vargas stopped two shots for Stockton.
Colorfranson had a game-high six shots (four on goal) for Stockton.
Tobolski put all three of his shots on target for the hosts. Senior forward
Nicholas O'Neill (Eatontown, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) led NJCU with two shots.

WHAT'S NEXT?NJCU is idle for a week until it hosts Ramapo College in an NJAC game at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field on Wednesday, October 14 at 3 p.m. Ramapo won last year's meeting on October 15, 2014 in Mahwah, NJ, 3-1. The all-time series is even, 19-19-5.
