NEWARK, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | John Jay College shot a blistering 62.5 percent from three-point distance, knocking down 10-of-16 chances from three-point range as the Bloodhounds upended the
New Jersey City University women's basketball team, 70-51, in round two of the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic at the Rutgers-Newark Golden Dome on November 15.
John Jay (1-1) hit 6-of-11 from three-point range in the first half (.545) when it led 16-11 through one quarter and 34-26 at halftime, before using 4-of-5 accuracy from long range (.800) to pull away late. NJCU dropped to 0-2.
Three players accounted for 49 of the Bloodhounds scoring totals, led by
Josephine Diaz' 21 points. She shot 6-of-10 from the field and a sizzling 6-of-8 from three-point land in 30 minutes.
Brianna Cunningham (6-of-12 FG) had a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds (all defensive) with four blocks while
Terri Chu scored 11 (4-8 FG), hitting 3-of-7 three-point shots.
Shaliyah Ruiz had nine points (3-7 FG), eight rebounds, six steals and five assists in 32 minutes.
In the loss, senior forward
Deseree Johnson (Red Bank, NJ/Monmouth Regional) notched a double-double of 10 points, 10 rebounds (five offensive, five defensive) and three steals. It was her fourth career double-double.
Freshman forward/center
Ianna Carroll (Newark, NJ/University) shot 5-of-8 for a career-best 10 points and junior guard
Jazz Randall (Parsippany, NJ/West Orange) tallied nine points (4-9 FG), six rebounds and five steals. Sophomore transfer
Mikeera Brown (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) finished with nine points and five rebounds while junior guard
Marcielle Richards (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) collected eight points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
John Jay, behind its three-point prowess, shot 46.9 percent overall (23-49). NJCU was 21-of-64 for 32.8 percent on the day.
The Bloodhounds used a 10-0 run in a span of 2:15 in the middle of the first quarter to jump out to a 12-4 advantage and when NJCU trimmed the deficit to three on a fast break steal and layup by
Johnson at 8:28 of the second quarter, John Jay responded with a 9-0 spurt to push the margin to 12 (25-13) at the 5:58 mark. NJCU drew within three (28-25) with 2:31 to play in the half before threes by
Diaz and
Chu made it an eight-point game (34-26) at the break. The Gothic Knights couldn't get closer than six the rest of the game and John Jay scored 15 of the final 19 points in the final 5:11 of the fourth quarter to add onto its lead.
