NJCU and William Paterson Split Offensive Slugfest; Knights Take Nightcap, 9-7

WAYNE, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University and William Paterson University combined for 61 hits in two games and split the final New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader of the 2015 season on April 25 at Jeff Albies Field. In game one, NJCU led 6-3 before the Pioneers scored six times in the bottom of the fourth and five more in the seventh, holding on for a 15-12 decision. In game two, the Gothic Knights trailed 4-3 before plating four runs in the sixth, knocking off WP, 9-7.

With the split, both teams finished the NJAC schedule at 6-12 in the league but NJCU (14-20) finished above William Paterson (20-14) in the standings by virtue of a win over regular-season champion Rutgers-Camden last week. NJCU posted its most conference wins in a season since going 6-11-1 in 1999.

Sophomore Zach Buchholz (Colonia, N.J./JFK-Iselin), the first baseman in game one and second baseman in game two, batted a combined 5-for-11 with five runs. Senior shortstop Michael Martucci (Bayonne, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) had a hit in each game to extend his consecutive games on-base streak to 31 while notching his 191st and 192nd career hits (33rd double)—now four shy of matching the career program standard (196).
