NJCU 4-1 for First Time Since 2007 After Sweeping Centenary

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | The New Jersey City University women's volleyball held Centenary College to a -.147 attack percentage while the Gothic Knights pounded out 26 kills and improved to 4-1 for the first time since the 2007 season with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-15) non-conference victory on September 10.
 
NJCU (4-1) posted its 15th consecutive win over the Cyclones (0-6), hitting .270 as a team (26-9-63) while landing 12 aces.
 
Sophomore setter Rachel McIntyre (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) delivered 21 assists and three aces while hitting .600 with three winners (3-0-5). Freshman outside hitter Georgina Rayo (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic), the New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for week one of the season, hit .412 with seven kills and no errors (7-0-17) while defending eight digs and junior middle hitter Shege Haxhaj (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) added six kills at a .455 percentage (6-1-11) with two aces.
 
Freshman outside Amber O'Donnell (East Newark, NJ/Harrison) floored four aces. NJCU also received three aces from sophomore Jacqueline Romero (West New York, NJ/Memorial) and nine digs from senior Valerie Ballestas (North Bergen, NJ/Weehawken). Zoey Woody led Centenary with seven assists and three aces.
 
The Knights hit .417 as a team in the second set with 12 kills (12-2-24). Centenary failed to reach positive territory on attack in any set and committed 21 errors on the night.
 
Of Note:
  • NJCU leads the all-time series, 21-6, and has won 15 consecutive matches in the series since its last loss on September 19, 1998.
  • NJCU is 4-1 for the first time since going 11-1 to open the 2007 season.
 
What's Next?:
NJCU plays its second tri-match of the season on Saturday, September 12 when it travels to Brooklyn, NY to face the College of St. Elizabeth (12 p.m.) and host Pratt Institute at 2 p.m. NJCU leads the all-time series with St. Elizabeth, 25-10 although the Eagles have won the last four meetings. NJCU and Pratt will meet for the first time.
