Box Score RIVERDALE, NY (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University and New York University played more than 96 minutes of scoreless non-conference men's soccer before NYU chalked up a golden goal winner in the 97th minute of the first overtime period to outlast the Gothic Knights, 1-0, on September 19 at Gaelic Park. It was the second year in a row NYU won the new rivalry, 1-0.
In a game where each team had 15 shots, NJCU (1-6-0) had the first two chances of the overtime period before the Violets (3-3) capitalized on their only chance of the extra session at the 96:44 mark when
Inder Sharma put away a chip from
Malcolm Montilus at the end of a scrum in front of the net.
Freshman goalkeeper
Anthony Moyano (Paterson, NJ/Passaic County Tech), who had been injured the entire season, made his collegiate debut in goal and played well, stopping five shots. His counterpart,
Lucas Doucette made six saves for NYU.
Freshman midfielder
Theo Sanoh (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) had NJCU's best scoring chances, tallying a game-high seven shots, including four on goal. No other player had more than three attempts for either side.
NYU went to the half with a 9-4 advantage in shots before the Gothic Knights had the better opportunities in the second half when they owned a 9-5 differential in shots.
OF NOTE:
- NYU leads all-time series, 7-2-1. .
- It was the second time in three years this matchup went to overtime. The last six meetings have all been decided by one goal or less.
- NJCU's second overtime game of the season and 127th in its history. NJCU is 26-30-71 all-time in overtime.
WHAT'S NEXT?NJCU begins New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Monday, September 21 at 7 p.m. when it heads to Camden, NJ to face Rutgers University-Camden (5-1-1, 1-0-0 NJAC). The game was originally scheduled for September 26 but a change of date was necessitated by the visit to Philadelphia that weekend by Pope Francis. RUC is ranked No. 10 in the NSCAA South Atlantic Region as of September 15. The Scarlet Raptors also received 112 points in last week's D3soccer.com National Poll—equivalent to a No. 28 national listing. Rutgers-Camden won last year's meeting (September 27, 2014), 3-0, in Jersey City and leads the all-time series, 22-8-8. RUC owns an 8-0-4 record in the last 12 meetings.
